Overnighter with (almost) teenager.

Postby mountnman » Sat 10 Nov, 2012 2:15 pm

Hi Everyone,

Just relocated a few months ago back up to Northside of Brisbane after several years in NSW, and am looking for a decent overnighter, preferably if a mountain is involved. I'll be taking an 11 year old, whom I would have no problem taking on the Six Foot Track in the Blue Mountains, and wants to hike the overland track next year. So we're looking for a moderately difficult walk (but Mt Barney is a bit too hard I think), with an overnight camp and return to car the next day.

Prepared to drive several hours in any direction. Have thought about Mt Warning, and the Bunya Mountains, but looking for other ideas.

I've just been informed as I've been typing this that the 6 year old may want to come too, so suggesting for the aforementioned hike, and also some easier not so hilly walks just incase the 6 year old comes too.

Thanks,
Andrew

P.S. I picked up a copy of Take-a-walk in SE Qld, and it has many great daywalks, maybe some suggestions on some of those we could link together too.

Bunya Mountains a bit to easy, what about the Gold Coast great walk, its not a overnighter, but would be a good build up walk for the longer walks, I'm off to do the gold coast walk in the next few days, probably heading off this wendsday or thursday.

The Lower Portals on Mt Barney Creek is possibly a kid friendly location, with a nice, easy walk in, nice camp site and a waterhole for swimming. There is also a mountain nearby for some exploring, or foot hills for exploring with young kids.

Girraween has some good options for overnighters and can incorprate some big rock hills and plenty of scrambling

Some excellent suggestions, especially Girraween except that it's a 4 and a half hour drive from here. We've decided on Green Mountains, and the border track.

Does anybody have any experience here with navigation and quality of the track?
