Leanganook Track - Water levels in Coliban Water Main Channe

Postby ChrisJHC » Mon 02 Dec, 2019 12:08 pm

Looking to hike this in the next week or so.

Anyone know if there is water in the Channel?

I know they've been doing repair works recently but hopefully it's all good now.

Thanks!

I was not far south of the track last week (Fryers Ranges Conservation Reserve, west of Taradale). The channel was flowing well at that location. Where were/are repairs happening?

Around North Harcourt.

Works were undertaken during September 2019.

Response from Coliban Water:

Yes the Coliban Main channel is running, and should remain running until mid-May 2020
The water with in the main channel is untreated water and is classed non potable or raw water
I assume that you have the relevant maps that will guide you to places that you can go to look at interesting items, just be mindful that this walking track is also Coliban Water rural staff’s access track as well.

Hey Chris what's the story with this walk? Have you been on it before? Much to see? One night two day type thing? Ta G

It's part of the Goldfields Track (that goes from Ballarat to Bendigo).

This part is from Castlemaine to Bendigo.
An easy 2.5 days with bush camping. A slight detour takes you to the Leanganook Picnic Area with toilets.
One "cute" part of the walk is that about half of it is along an open water channel meaning you don't have to carry water.
You just scoop it out of the channel. You must treat the water as there will be plenty of dead animals in it upstream.
There is only one serious hill - Mount Alexander.

When I did this last year I left my car at Castlemaine Train Station, walked to Bendigo then caught the train back to my car.

I'd rate this as a good walk rather than a great one. A good intro to multi-day walking if you haven't done that before.
