Snowshoes for Bogong early Oct 2018?

Postby muddy99 » Sat 06 Oct, 2018 10:57 am

Just checking if anyone has been up Bogong in the last few days (ie, early Oct 2018) and if so, are snowshoes still needed - on either Eskdale or The Staircase? I used them back in August when there was serious depth, but this time I'm only looking at day summitting, no overnight pack etc.

At the moment yes but only on top or southern slopes. The spring snow gets a bit soft and you will post hole through melting areas. Did this on the Long Spur recently when I was not able to ski and did not have snowshoes. The snow just falls away under you feet at times. Five steps might be good and the next one you are up to your thighs.

Definitely maybe. I think if you pick your route and hit the snowline early on a cold morning you could get away with it.
