Great Ocean Walk

Postby Michaelpav57 » Fri 02 Feb, 2018 5:02 pm

We are planning to walk the Great Ocean Walk in early May from Apollo Bay to The 12 Apostles. Having walked the Carnarvon Walk and the Overland Track fairly recently we should be up for it.
I am a bit of a scaredy however and am concerned about the beach walking / tides and river crossings. Should I be worried? Has anyone got advice?

You’ll have a great time!

The warnings are necessarily over-cautious, however as long as you are sensible and don’t push your luck you’ll be fine. In most cases there is an inland option so don’t be afraid to use that if you’re not sure.

Just make sure you take a copy of the tide tables with you and be prepared for rain and wind as the weather can be unpredictable.

Note that a lot of people start from Marengo as the first few km through Apollo Bay are just road-bashing.

Yep, just don't attempt Wreck Beach at any time other than low tide. That said, it's not a long stretch of beach - and worth a look.

1. ChrisJHC and Eremophila are right. And depending on the tide times, you could take the inland route and setup camp at DK, then do the very short walk down to Wreck Beach later in day, or perhaps early next morning.

2. Moderator/s may wish to move this thread to Local Track/Victoria where it rightly belongs.
