Circuit walks aroung Melbourne ?

Postby JOCKs » Sat 04 Jul, 2015 11:32 am

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has some recommendation of 3-4 hour (thereabouts) circuit walks around or close to Melbourne. For beginners ? I dont mind the travel time, but im limited to 2wd (front) atm. But would also love to hear what 4wd accessible tracks their are close by, getting the 4wd back on the road soon.

Cheers

Are you a beginner in terms of fitness, or difficulty? What side of Melbourne are you on?

Lots of good walks of that length in the Glenn Tempest guidebooks. Particularly in the Brisbane Ranges and Lerderderg parks.

How many days are you looking at?
How many kilometres per day?

Plenty of tracks in the Dandenong Ranges. A lot of tracks link up with each other so you could make up your own circuit.

You could try some of the easy sections of the Mt Macedon circuit:

The Wreck Beach section of the Great Ocean Walk is lovely. Park at Wreck Beach Car Park, walk along Wreck Beach, lunch at Devils Kitchen campsite, then return via the inland section of the track. NB: beach section must be done at low tide....

Ima beginner in regard to difficulty, not really looking to break any records. Just a scenic walk on Saturdays.

Macedon is great if you want a good view every now and then, although it was bitterly cold up there yesterday. The trails around O'Brien's Crossing in Lerderderg are lovely meandering paths. As easy or hard as you want to make them. Both worth a look.

I don't know how serious people might consider walks in Woodlands Historic Park next to Melbourne Airport but there are some nice walks, views and wildlife there. And you can't get much closer to Melbourne. Very easy walking. I went there recently and made a video. https://youtu.be/_eg4N4iNm6E

I'm not sure what you consider to be close to Melbourne but if Marysville is not too far away there are some great tracks up there that are suitable for beginners.

I really appreciate the suggestions guys, wreck beach looks like a great walk. I'll have to plan that one with low tide (im an avid fisherman ) and hopefully we get a break in the weather. Marysville is looks very promising, I've driven past their a bunch of times and never knew their were trails, that's only about 2 hours drive too !

Cathedral range is a good walk around that distance from Melbourne too. A nice little challenge and at least it has a view (nice if you're into farmland). Fairly straightforward but does require a little attention to be paid along the ridge when following the orange triangles. Not that one could get lost on a such a straight and narrow ridge, of course.
