Camping Watson’s Crags / Sentinel area

Postby bauplenut » Tue 23 Oct, 2018 8:16 pm

We are planning walking along Main Range area in early December. Thinking of one night camping in Watson’s Crags / Sentinel area. What would best area for water resupply and camping on top of the range in that area ? We are aware to avoid camping headwaters of restricted areas.

Regards

There is plenty of water up there. Snow drifts will still be melting. You won’t have trouble at that time. If there is a stream on the topo it will be running.

There are some good protected campsites near the Sentinel. I won’t say anymore because they are really nice and I don’t think their location should be made publicly available. You will see them when you are there.

The normal camping spot in that area is drop into the Strzelecki Creek bowl between the southern side of the ridge to Watson's Crags and the northern side of the spur to Mt Sentinel - there is usually reliable water. At that time of year you will also find spots on the eastern side of the range with water from rapidly melting snow patches around Twynam - a bit more sheltered.

camping on top of the range in that area ?

Just be aware that camping on the TOP of the Range can give you 100+ kph gusting wind all night at a few hours notice. Most tent designs can't handle that. You might want to find somewhere a shade more sheltered.
