Camping/day walks opportunities btwn Canberra & Mallacoota

I'm off for 6 days next week to Mallacoota (departing from Melbourne), then up North probably as far as Mimosa Rocks, and back through Cooma and Wodonga. I was wondering what are the best opportunities for bushwalking and camping in the area ? I'll probably do Ben Boyd and Mimosa Rocks, but they can be done pretty quickly, it's mostly car touring and short walks. What's the access situation to inland parks such as Deua, Wadbiliga or Namadgi in winter ? Any opportunities for good bushwalks (without the need for snow gear or a 4WD for access) ? And last thing : are you supposed to carry chains when you take the Alpine Way through Kosciuszko ?

Yes you do need to carry chains (and know how to fit them) between Khancoban and Jindabyne.
They must be diamond pattern chains as well. There are fines for not complying.

Thx, after more consideration, I think I'm gonna explore Ben Boyd, Mimosa Rocks, Jarvis Bay and Morton instead.

Hi Hallu,

A couple of suggestions in the Morton NP are The Castle (probably the best day walk I have done) and Corang Peak from Wog Wog.

In the Namadgi NP, Mt Gudgenby from Yankee Hat carpark is a good one and Mt Gingera from Corin Dam has some great views.

Thx for the suggestions, unfortunately The Castle and Corang seem like very long day walks, for my first visit of the area, I think I'm gonna stick to easier walks.

Mt Imlay NP near Eden has a nice walk to the top of Mt Imlay. Murramarang NP near Batemans Bay is also nice, with camping at Pebbly Beach and some walks.

In my experience people are rarely fined for not carrying chains - if so, probably only if involved in an accident, or where they get stuck in snow and block the road . I've often seen people at chain fitting bays just told to turn around and go hire some chains. If you checked the snow forecast just prior to a journey, and the road were clear and not requiring chains, I'd say your risk of being fined is very low. Caveat emptor, of course.

In regards to your question, there is, of course, the Wilderness Coast which is a 4 day trek to the north of Malacoota - you need to get a boat across the bay (or wade/swim at the right tide), and then there is some interesting beach walking and coastal lagoons to explore. I believe there are other walks along the coast south of Malacoota.

Light to Light (Whaling tower to light) Ben Boyd NP nice camping at Saltwater Creek with easy day walk either side north to tower or south to Green Cape
+1 Mt Imay
Long Beach between Pambula and Eden is a good walk, camping at south end
Goodenia Rainforest walk west of Pambula off Mt Durrah rd
Bournda NP has lots of good little walks and beachs including Kangarutha track from Wallgoot Lake to Tathra
Bithry Inlet
Corunna Inlet/Mystery Bay
Eurobodalla NP has a lot of camping and walks
Most of the coast line can be walked with access tracks suitable for 2WD most of the year
When I'm having a lazy break on the Far South Coast I pick up free cartoscope tourist maps that have camping and nice little walks marked for all these areas.
NPs have day use and cheap camping fees. There is a NP information centre in Merimbula next door to the police station

Thx. I think I'll do one day Ben Boyd/ Nadgee, one day Mimosa Rocks/Murramarang, one day Jervis Bay, and one day Morton (I'll probably have a go at Fitzroy Falls and Pigeon House). The other 2 days will be driving. What do you reckon would be the best car camping ground around Goulburn/Maruland or South of Morton ? I heard that the Bungonia camping ground, 15 km North-East of Bungonia is very nice.

Yes, Bungonia is nice.

Definitely do the walk up Pigeon House if it is a fine day. It is only an hour or so,m and gives great views. Haven't been to Mt Bushwalker but have heard it has good views.
