Where to go for my next adventure?

Hi all. I am fairly new to hiking and in December 2013 I walked the Milford track with my 14 year old son. (So sad to hear of the death on that track today )
We had such a great time, its really whet my appetite for more. I've been looking on the net for advice on destinations but am having trouble deciding on where to go next.
I have a back injury which prevents me from carrying a huge pack day in day out, but I handled the 7 kg pack on the Milford pretty well - which is why at this stage I'll stick to guided walks for now.

So, I was wondering if anyone has any experience and advice on a destination/s that might be suitable.

I would prefer (but not be totally restricted to);

Guided
Cooler to mild climate
5-10 days
not too mountainous (but some is ok)
unusual and adventurous hikes welcome!
A little bit of danger, risk taking also welcome
More keen on international destinations

I was thinking maybe King Ludwig way in Bavaria might be good?
Any advice is appreciated.

The Overland Track would suit you quite fine.


If your main issue is the pack weight, you could consider some more lightweight hiking styles, a base weight of 4.5kg leaves you enough space for a day or two worth of food.
That way you can still do weekend trips.

14 years old boy can start to pick up some weight. Not everything has to be carried by the parent/s.

In Europe you can try the "hill" countries, such as Slovenia or the Czech Republic. Climate is mild in summer, and it's not as hardcore as the French/Italian/Swiss Alps. In France, I would strongly advice you to do the Cévennes ( http://eng.cevennes-parcnational.fr/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A9ven ... ional_Park ). For slightly colder/wetter places, you have Northern Scotland or Norway, Ireland might be good to. I hear there's very good hiking in the Canary Islands, very wild, might be a bit too hot for you I don't know.

Glam camping is taking off around the world and there really are plenty of options out there. All depends on how far and how expensive one cares to go. Lots in the US and Europe as already suggested. Just do a search on "glamping hiking guided".

Oh just so you know 'Gpsguided'' my 14 year old lad carried more than I did by his own will, offered to carry more, and didn't complain once.

Picos de Europa in Spain could be an interesting option, cool weather, wonderful walks and views etc.

Las Alpukharras, the valley network in the Spanish Sierra Nevada would not be too hot in Spring or Autumn. You need to be there in Summer for the 3000 M peaks circuit.

Torres del Paine in Chile is good, can use the refugios while on the 'W' section and either use a guide for the Northern section (as we did) or the campsites there have tents already set up you hire (book ahead) Note that it's usually just under 10 deg C midsummer, and expect some snow over John Gardiner Pass, but great fun and very doable with a 14 year old. Hubby wants to rerun with both late teenage minions. It's just expensive getting to Chile full stop
We used Swoop Patagonia, a U.K based company to organise, with fantastic local contacts. We combined hiking, fly fishing and horse riding over just 2 weeks. Was great!

I have started looking at trekking in Turkey in the northern Summer. They have 3000-5000 M + peaks and mountains and the $$ exchange rate is good too.

Scotland has plenty of walks with a lot of tour groups that will carry your bags between places . West highland way is the most popular nice easy walk with plenty of views great people too .

This week the idea of trekking in the High Atlas mountains came to me. Morocco is quite stable as destinations go , it has some interesting non trekking attractions too ;-P .I must look into this for 2018. It could be cheap and cheerful to set out from London and back .
