Body of Australian soldier found on mountain

The body of missing Australian soldier Captain Paul McKay has been found near the summit of Scarface Mountain in upstate New York.

There were grave concerns for Capt McKay, who was suffering post-traumatic stress disorder after a tour of Afghanistan and was on leave from the Australian Army.

"We can sadly confirm we have located him," Sergeant James Law, of New York's Saranac Lake police department, told AAP on Thursday.

"We held out hope we'd find him alive.

"His family has been notified."

Capt McKay was last seen on New Year's Eve walking on railroad tracks in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York.

Capt McKay, 31, from Canberra, sent an email to his father on December 30.

In the email Capt McKay said he was leaving all of his possessions to his fathe

Read that in our local press too. Not too sure if they are implying his post-traumatic stress disorder was related to the accident. Unfortunate.

there was a case recently of an american who enlisted for a third tour in the middle east, just before he was due to turn up for his tour of duty he, walked off into the wilderness ill equipped for cold weather. his body was eventually found.
