Hartz Pk to Adamsons Pk

Postby wello » Fri 04 Jul, 2008 11:33 pm

I'm interested in a traverse from Hartz Peak to Adamson's Peak, and wondered if anyone had done it or had some information. From the top of Mt Snowy (just south of Hartz Peak) there appears to be a high ridge running all the way to Adamsons. There's a peak half way along (Esperance Peak I think), and it looks fairly open.

I'm thinking it would be either a long car shuttle, or two groups walking from either end swapping keys in the middle.

Anyway, any info on the route, in particular water sources, would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hello Wello [sounds like an echo ;) ],

I did this trip a few years ago, together with someone else who had been before.

Took us 2 hard days, original pan was to make it a cruisy 3-dayer, but my walking partner had to cut it 1 day short for work reasons.

The route: stick to the high bits. The area ~2-3km SE of Mt Snowy has heaps of dense scrub. A tagged route exists, not always easy to find, but it makes the journey a bit easier.

Water: We had 2 rainy days. Camped on the SW side of Esperance Peak and there were quite a few small tarns with plenty of water. I'm sure there was more in other places, but can't remember the details.

Hope you enjoy the trip, how about if you provide a report in this thread for the Knowledge Base?

Hi Wello,

I don't have any info on the traverse but if you are planing to go in winter this is what we found a few weeks ago... We turned around at Hartz Peak as visibility fell to almost nothing but we made it to the summit :) ... fun walk in the snow!

Posted a couple of pics of our recent trip there...

Cheers, Erin

Thanks for the info - plenty of snow always makes things interesting.

I'm thinking of this as a trip best attempted in Summer or autumn, much easier to navigate off track when you can see! Not sure when, but I try and have a supply of plans ready to go when opportunities arise.

I did this in October. 2 very hard days. Day 1 8 hours, day 2 14.5 hrs. A lot of scrub but very satisfying.

Interested to know more about this one, was the scrub in the Mt Hartz to Mt Esperance section or the Esperence to Adamsons section

Going down from Snowy was OK for a while and then we followed a very old track marked with tapes and scrunched up number plates? This stopped when we got to the bottom. The scrub was very thick from there to the Pimple just before Esperance. There was scrub as we got off Esperence and as we started for the Calf , but not quite as bad. A three day trip would have been much better.

An article here about a recent trip to Adamsons / The Calf / Mesa

http://www.wildtiger.biz/?tracknotes&id=66

Might provide a bit of info for those doing the traverse route.

Cheers
