Walks Around Hobart

Postby iain.sheppard » Wed 30 May, 2007 3:06 pm

Hi All,

I just signed up and wondering if anyone knows of some nice walks about hobart? My partner is 28 weeks pregnant so nothing too demanding :)

Look forward to hearing of some good walks soon :)

Cheers

Have a look at this link

The Lost World on Mt Wellington is a great place to visit. I do not know what it is like to be 28 weeks pregnant so am not sure whether it would be too much. The link above specifically shows climbers on the cliffs, but as it says, easy access - so you can get to a very spectacular place with minimal trouble. But I dare say they are talking "easy" for someone that is going to climb a cliff, so again, I don't know whether that is too much.

Are you familiar with Ferntree? Just past (maybe a couple of hundred metres or so, it's been a while) the turnoff to Mt Wellington there is a hotel on the other side, Ferntree Tavern. Park somewhere around here, and across the road there is a picnic shelter (or is it a toilet block, as I said it's been a while). Pass this on a well marked track on the downhill side of this construction and continue on through a lovely, flat forested walk to take you to a turn right, a short uphill section to a waterfall known as Silver Falls. This is definitely possible! Anyone in that area could describe it better for you if my instructions are a bit muddy.

From the top of Mt Wellington there are tracks, I remember one that goes south along the plateau for a while but not sure about any more of it.

A lovely stroll along Seven Mile Beach is always pleasant.

Hey, I just found this link.

Check the visitors section with data sheets and maps.
Actually, forget all of that and have a look at page 3 of this

Gotta love the internet, it's got EVERYTHING!!

The walk to Collins Bonnet is a good one. You can start from near Big Bend. Not too sure if i'd take someone 28 weeks pregnant though. Hmm. There's a good book of day walks around hobart by Bert Elson and Jan Hardy. You can get it at Paddy Pallin.

Silver falls as previously mentioned are good...and while in the area check out the Octopus Tree...its AWESOME. then in order of difficulty:

Strickland Falls (easy except for some rock hopping)
Sphinx Rock easy...with views to maria island on clear day
Ogradys Falls (depends on track but relatively flat if approached along fire trail..is a bit longer walk though
Rocky Wheelans Cave - Uphill but only short. Bushrangers old haunt.

Myrtly Valley Track is nice and short too...to some really nice waterfalls.

More info on these can be provided if any pique your interest.
