Ann Stocks -- farewell

Ann Stocks, Life Member of the North West Walking Club, died Sunday morning at Melaleuca nursing home, East Devonport. I think she was 92. She was the first female President, and a very active walker from 1964 when she joined the club, till 1980, when she had to tone things down a fair bit after breaking her leg at home. Prior to joining the NWWC she was with the Launceston Walking Club. Mavis Rowlands, whom Ann worked with sometimes, introduced her to bushwalking.

I put together a 150 minute audio visual about Ann a few years ago, ending with the attached slide (taken by Murray Geard in December 1966). I was never able to work out on which summit she is sitting. Any suggestions?

The AV was shown four times in Ulverstone, but I didn't get around to showing it in Launceston. I may do so in the coming weeks at the Queen Victoria Museum, in fond memory of Ann, who is regarded as the matriarch of the NWWC.

I can't figure out the background. If we're looking at PE from BB, the background is Cathedral Plateau. It's hard to tell in the photo, but it looks like there's a phantom rocky-topped mountain in between. Or that's part of Cathedral, but that much scree doesn't look right. Does anyone have a good shot of Cathedral from BB or Oakleigh?

This is Barn Bluff looking over Oakleigh to Pelion East and a whole lot more. Angle is different to the shot of Ann and the cairn is also different.

If that is Pelion East and Oakleigh at the edge, the shot would have to be further west.

My final guess then, inglis. You can see a lake at the bottom left.

I'm not sure where Ann was sitting, but it's not mt Inglis, where I remember the summit is scrubbier without scree or boulders. Ann looks like she was a very lovely person.

Well, I was very hesitant to do so! I just couldn't work out the background. But nnw's pic from BB above doesn't fit.

Sounds like Ann had a good life. Nothing sad about that. Death comes for us all in the end. It's the life part we need to focus on.

There were about 20 people at the funeral on Friday 16th. Ann had no children, so it was just a few nephews, nieces, friends, and a smattering of walking club people. Four Life Members were in attendance -- if you include Ann.

After Ann recorded the commentary for Portrait of a Sole in 2016, she gave me most of her bushwalking gear, all from the 1960s. That jacket she's wearing on Barn Bluff, is now inside her pack, next to her Paddy Pallin tent, just a few metres away in the garage. It's a pity such things eventually end up in land fill. Maybe they should have been placed beside her in the coffin.
