Black Swans in Junction Lake

Postby tomberli » Wed 06 Jan, 2010 2:33 pm

I recently spent a few days exploring the upper Mersey River and when we got to Junction Lake I was surprised to find three Black Swans. It just struck me as "a bit weird" to find Swans at over 1000m altitude - but maybe thats just me and Swans up there are actually completely normal. Didn't take a photo immediately unfortunately and went I went to check them out later they went to the other side of the lake and were out of sight. They were definitely adults swans though. Anyone know more about birds? Is that unusual to find them up there or have people seen similar things?

I've seen the black swans in a few of the highland lakes on the central plateau at around 1000m. I thought it was pretty weird too (and still do, actually), but they do seem to like it up there.

I've seen them at least 3 times, including on a small unnamed lake near lake Halkyard, and another somewhere between Long Tarns and Lake Gwendy (can't remember which one). I can't remember where else, but was somewhere equally high and cold.

Not sure about being unusual, but I have seen them at Lake Sally in Bernes Valley as well.

Was surprised and amused to see a lone black swan feeding in Lake Lexie as we were having lunch there on Wednesday

At Lake Lexie... I think that's the swan I saw a few months ago. :). There was a bit of snow around then too.

Plenty on the hydro impoundments, such as Penstock Lagoon, Little Pine Lagoon, Arthurs etc. I've seen heaps at Lake Fergus as well, which is around 1100m.
There is usually a nesting pair near the bridge over the Shannon at Miena too.
