Who would you go with ?

Postby Mechanic-AL » Fri 06 Sep, 2019 12:39 pm

Hypothetical question. If I were considering joining the mass exodus of people moving to Tassie and once there I wished to dedicate some time and energy to an organization primarily set up to preserve the flora, fauna and natural landscapes of the state who would rank highly in your opinion of such groups ?
( more interested in who you feel maybe doing good work than who's back you would like to stick the knife in ).

Wildcare is great. Tas Land Conservancy is also worthy. I've volunteered a few times on ground with them. I really like their approach to conservation.

What I've seen of Landcare in Tassie would make them my choice. Passionate locals. And diversity, not necessarily all 'greenies'. They get involved in some interesting, grass roots, projects.

Landcare, wildcare - the "friends of" organisations seem to goodwork -e.g. Friends of Mt Field, Friends of Wellington Park. Also worth checking out the Environmental Defenders Office if you're broadly interested in preserving the state too - they do some valuable things.

Wildcare certainly has some passionate groups that range from local reserve caretakers, passionate wildlife people, those that focus on looking after islands - lots of choice

Wildcare and Landcare certainly seem to keep their activities calendar humming along.
Tas Land Conservancy also sound like they have the best interests of the enviroment at heart.
Good to know there are small bands of very committed people out there.
Thanks for the responses.

The Tarkine.org .
I have maintained an interest and active contact with the group since 1997.
This unique and treasured environment needs all the protection it can get from the grubby hands of the Tasmanian Liberals.

Wildcare have great loyal volunteers who keep old huts alive, tracks trimmed, weeds gone and provide great heritage research in relation to lighthouses too. Tasmanian land conservancy have a very good in-depth focus on protecting and rehabilitating land and species, and they don’t just lock up the land, they consult and use a mixture of indigenous and modern fire regenerating techniques, employ young science students and flora fauna professionals and focus long term on land management when fund raising. We are very lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers too as poor PWS budget just doesn’t stretch far these days. Bushcare also is very active around hobart, keeping weeds at bay and offering plant giveaways occasionally of local flora.
