Went up Olympus on Friday, camped at Lake Oenone then up to the top and then down to Petrarch. Great views and a beautiful days.
I should have asked this question before we went but I will ask them now.

Is there a defined route from Lake St Clair up to Lake Oenone. We bush bashed up from about 2kms north of Echo. Was hard work.

Couldn't find aroute down to Cuvier valley so had to bush bash down.

I would have thought there would be at least a route.

Don't know your answer, but whenever I am going to places like that I like to ask the local ranger... Great advice to be gained from a little local knowledge.

There is no definite route but it is usually best to start about 20 minutes north of Echo Point. Parts of the way have developed a bit of pad.

It would be about 25 minutes for me, a slow walker. Cheers, d

There was no track there about 20 years ago, the only time I've been. I do recall that there were some rather steep escarpments on the way up, and we luckily found a route through. Though there was no track, the bush was mainly rainforest. It looks like the fagus around the two lakes would make this a great Autumn walk.

I climbed Olympus several years ago by the Cuvier Valley track. I followed this track until about 1 k short of Lake Petrarch. I took the obvious route up to the col. It was very bouldery but I always found that scrambling over large boulders got me up mountains more easily than climbing a typical Tasmanian walking track. I descended to the St Clair track, this was far more wearing than the climb.

I found coming down the Cuvier Valley side more scrubby.
Didn't have too much hassles getting through the small cliff line on the St Clair side.

As it is a fairly popular walk I would have thought there would be at least a discernable route. Maybe it isn't as popular as I thought.
