Cave Near Junction Cabin

Postby mjdalessa » Fri 13 Feb, 2009 4:28 pm

On old maps a cave appears near junction cabin.
I've heard rumours of people sleeping there back in the 40's and 50's.
It's supposedly quite deep.
Has anyone been to this cave?

To get there the map shows to go along the partly made (at the time) lenah valley fire trail until you hit the waterhole.
Then theres a track heading up the embankment on the left.
I'm pretty much certain this track to the cave is overgrown and so is the route out to the hunters track.

Could anyone help me w/ this one?

It is not a cave in the true sense, but part of a sandstone overhang, known as Lakins Lair. Fred Lakin who is a decent age still visits the place regularly and a memorial, plaque to his father (Noel I think from memory) is up there on a ledge.

A track leaves a little further on that you mention, pretty close the high point of the fire trail and is quite clear and easy tp follow. The overhang has a small wall and a chimney at one end. The cliffs are quite nice to visit.

Sounds like an intresting place.
Did something happen there by any chance?
