Fagus watch 2014

A strange year indeed, it seems to still be holding on well around Cradle, even lots of green where its sheltered.. I'd imagine though that any wind (later in the week) will blow a lot off the tops.

Something I hadn't noticed before is the big patch on the north-east side Mt Emmett:

It doesn't do the scene justice, tbh. Had the sun and clouds doing that spotlight thing most of the time I was up there, but it's damn difficult to photograph.
Was a great walk, but.

Yep, I'm greener than ever with envy. This season although late seems to have provided the best displays i can remember seeing. Lady Cyn's shots blew my socks off and nnw's has set fire to them...ahhh it's been a quiet walking month So many good shots, nuts' shot of Emmett too, wow...

A sample from today at Cradle. Heavy rain overnight meant waterfalls flowing into Crater Lake and Lake Wilks were pumping.

Love the way the stuff collects on the tracks and gives you that lovely soft (slippery) golden carpet to walk on.

Too kind including me sbs, those pics are dismal by comparison. I agree though, been a lovely autumn. Lots of colour, pleanty of reds.

What an icon this Fagus plant is. I have watched the saga unfold via the wonderful photographs from all the lucky buggers who have seen it this year, it has been an absolute pleasure to witness.

Hey NNW, yes I was the tall fella on his own with a tent and mat strapped to his canvas backpack. Think I left the visitor centre around half 11. Were you coming down the track the other way or at the visitor centre?

It's been thought of and a friend tried a simple version last season with no success. Very difficult, but agree would look awesome…

It might work if you build a temporary greenhouse to cover the fagus before it changes, to prevent altogether too much movement and blurring.

You'd most probably need some fagus on private land or a lot of haggling with parks to get permission.

I was more thinking of a big picture time lapse, say over several locations, not a macro shot though that would be good too. I saw some time lapse shots over a year of the rocky mountains a while ago and that was breath taking. I was hopping that someone had done something similar in Tassie with the fagus in the picture somewhere. Perhaps we should make some noises to make this happen. Australian or National geographic would have to sponsor someone to do it wouldn't they, maybe ol Dick would chip in because its about Australia

Three months!!! Get stuffed! I want a whole year of time lapse. Think of the all the seasons. From the greening of spring the drying of summer, yellowing of autumn and white of winter. Shots of Cradle, Frenchmans maybe the Western Arthurs. Are you sure that your up for that step by step, you might need some help . I don't know the first thing about time lapse except for taking lots of shots but I can Google it

NNW - seems you had it wet up there too - your photos are stunning though. I bought the pack a couple of years ago on the recommendation of someone of this site (from a shop in QLD somewhere - can't seem to find the name), it's been brilliant. Schlepped it through Africa, and it did wonderful being soaking wet on the W Arthurs for a week too.

As for the time lapse - I vote the year too! I'm thinking we form a crack team (a la chasing ice) and fund it, well, umm...surely there was something in the budget about fagus watch!?
