Starting some walks

Postby beary » Mon 12 Jan, 2009 4:31 pm

Hi all,

I just went away with my family down to Saltwater River. We did a 3 hour return bushwalk to Clarks Cliff. We all loved it and decided we'd like to do some more. but we're clueless about where. I found a pdf re Wellington Park walks from a much earlier post, which looks good. Anyway, is there some secret masterlist somewhere of all known bushwalks in Southern Tassie? At this stage we'd be interested in walks between 1 and 3 hours return but also like to know about 4-5 hrs returns for the future. Level either easy or medium. It's strange but it's about the only thing we've done as a family which we've all enjoyed! Are there some suggestions to get us kickstarted? Many thanks!

You could start with the P&WS. Their 60 short walks in Tasmania includes a number of Southern walks.

Forestry short walks also include Southern Tasmania.

And then there are the books.

Highly recommend Chapman's Day Walks book. Can be bought at the map shop in Hobart on Eliz st, probably other places too.

A cople of other small books are - 50 family walks in and around Hobart and - More family walks around Hobart.
These books contain 90 walks from mere strolls to some more serious adventures well out of town.
They give locations, drive time, grading, and many other usefull tips for the newbie or more experienced walker.
Good luck with it.

There's a Family Walks book for the Northwest and Northeast, as well as a couple of Historic Walking Guides to Launceston and Hobart.
