Junction to Lake StClair via Traveller Range

Postby crazyone » Fri 12 Dec, 2008 8:16 pm

Ive been thinking of doing this trip for some time now and am just wondering if it sounds feasible or if people here have done it and have a route they took. it all looks like it could be done and im sure it has. Im really quite keen to check out Lake Sappho, see StClair from the Traveller Range rim and also wouldn't mind checking out Mt Spurling. The map makes it look like it rises fairly spectacularly from Lake Riengeena. All help, comments appreciated.

This area is very enjoyable to walk in - and to do so - you should be competent at off track walking in Tassie - and so only need minimal notes. Follow the track from Junction Lake to Lake Artemis. From there the track continues on the north side of lake Eros to near the outlet of Lake Merope. You could go from Lake Artemis onto the top of the Mts of Jupiter and traverse south OR go around the east side of L Eros and the west side of Lake Payanna (avoid fagus on its east side - try and follow the white areas on the Du Cane 1:25,000 OR you could stay on the track to near the outlet of L Merope and climb the scrubby knoll to its south - and then follow generally open country past the Orion Lakes (on the SW). Either of the last two routes will take you to near Mt Spurling - which can be climbed from the north or NW.

When i walked to Mt Spurling - we did so from Du Cane Gap. From it summit - we changed our route - and decided to walk closer to the Mts of Jupiter. So - we headed around the south side of L Payanna - onto the mts of Jupiter - and stayed about 1km east of L Riengena - again following white areas on the map where possible. It was quite easy going on the whole. We continued - easy going to Rim Lake (then a detour to Mt Ida - a lot slower and scrubbier and some tricky scrambling and route finding - but well worthwhile and return to Rim Lake) - then easy going to the east side of L Sapho.

Now - from there we had been advised to avoid the top of the ridge south (lots of fallen timber) - so we worked out a route that connected up the open bits (marked on the map as heath) - and this was excellent - fast and generally open with only short bits of scrub) - to drop down to to Travellers Rest Lagoon - then around it south end to the outlet - and a cairned route to forestry roads (then a long road bash to Derwent Bridge Hotel)

Some photos and more notes on -
