Murchison Falls

Postby Joe » Tue 25 Sep, 2007 8:21 am

Does anyone know of or have you been to these falls? I had some pictures come through work of them but the owner of said pics was a mexican who had been taken in by a local and couldn't tell me much about them. They are near roseberry. Thats all i know. Oh...and they are pretty fudging huge. He said over 100 meters. And from the photos I would say they are close to that. They weren't Montezuma either...I made sure of that.

As I read I was thinking Montezuma... until I read your last line.
I am unaware of any other falls that high... I recall Montezuma are about the 2nd largest in the state, so one would think if Murchison Falls exists and are indeed around the 100 metre mark, they should be well known.

My thoughts.

So I decided to do a search. I couldn't find anything on Murchison falls, at least not in Australia...

But I did find out a whole lot of misinformation.

smh.com.au article
The Montezuma Falls tumble 113 metres and, as such, are the highest falls in Tasmania.

Discover Tasmania
Montezuma Falls, Tasmania's highest waterfalls,

exploroz.com
Montezuma Falls is the tallest in Tasmania at 104 metres.

Westcoast Tas gov (pdf file)

Cheap holiday accommodation site

Travelmate

Total travel site

Maths UTAS
Montezuma Falls; the state's tallest at 104 metres.

Rosebery Online Access Centre
Montezuma Falls
One of Tasmania's Highest Waterfalls... ... from over 100 metres above....

But then, there's St Columba falls, at around 90 metres...
NETasmania site
St Columba Falls are the tallest falls in Tasmania,

Most sites play it safe and say something like
Discover Tasmania
one of Tasmania’s highest falls.

Regardless, why I decided to post again, before I got off on this tangent, was to say that Montezuma is a lovely fall to visit. You can take a mountain bike, a dog, a picnic... It's flat all the way as it follows the old railway track.
And at 104 or 113 metres, it is the highest, I mean tallest, I mean largest, I mean one of the tallest falls in Tassie... Unless St Columba is bigger at 90 metres

Montezuma arent the tallest...they are short by about 30 meters. There is a set in SW somewhere that are around 156meters. They are unnamed. The tallest named falls at 130meters are Skew Falls. I have the govt list database for waterfall data. Its damn handy :)

Winterbrook falls are touted as being tallest too around the place. wrong.

The tallest single drop fall is ralphs falls i believe.

A while ago myself and a fellow geocacher put together a database of a heap of interesting things...its over here:

http://geodata.cachegurus.com/

Generates a OZI wpt file for Trigpoints, falls or giant trees.
