Chapman South West Tasmania

Postby hutfinder » Wed 22 Mar, 2017 1:39 pm

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has seen the reprints of Chapman's "South West Tasmania" about. His website says "We plan to print the next edition in autumn 2017, probably on sale after Easter." but I was hoping maybe it had got off the ground earlier, or someone might be aware of old stock somewhere (I've tried Mountain Creek, Hobart Bookshop, Find Your Feet and Fullers)

Help appreciated :D

Morning Hutfinder,
I can't help with locating a copy of the last edition but if you're wanting the track notes for a specific walk I'm happy to scan and email them to you.

I was considering making the same offer, but changed my mind. I think that would be in breach of copyright law.

thanks MickyB and Osik - I appreciate the help and the kind offer :D

Son of a Beach does make a good point though re: copies of track notes, I think I'll just need to be patient and wait out the new edition

I can give everyone a definitive answer for this.

We were hoping to get the book done around Easter. However, my computer crashed and it has taken some time to restore everything. A new computer has meant I have had to upgrade my operating system and can no longer use my old desktop publishing software (Ventura). I have now successfully got it all working and got the old text for South West Tasmania into InDesign. At present I am updating all the text. As there is no no rush to get it into print, we plan have it on sale in October. It will be sent to print with two other books. On its own, its not financially viable to print South West Tasmania hence why it gets printed with other books which helps to reduce printing costs. If you think I make a fortune with our guides then read my webpage at www.john.chapman.name/pdf.html - read the second paragraph.

Summary - the new edition is being planned for October, it is being updated and will cover the same walks as before. The second edition of South Coast Track will be printed at the same time.

The link about the minimum print run size and marginal economics of colour book printing is very interesting. Makes me even more grateful that people like John Chapman, Chris Bell and Wolfgang Glowacki are still publishing these days (it's clearly for the love of it, not the hope of making any money).

Picked up 3 copies (one for myself and Christmas gifts!) last week from the Map Shop! New edition looks fabulous and we're lucky to have it!
