Best Overnighters in Winter

Hi all,

So where are the best places for overnight hikes during the Winter in Tassie?

Freycinet Circuit, Pine Valley with a day trip up to the Labyrinth, Mt Rufus with a night at Shadow Lake, South Cape Rivulet...
that's all i've got.

We tried to get to Freycinet last week actually, but it warn't meant ot be. Thanks for the leads Dee!

A couple of relatively easy ones are also the Labyrinth and Mt Olympus...

The Labyrinth is an amazing place in winter and the tent options increase significantly with a heavy snow cover (see pic below)

My Olympus is also a great overnight winter mission... off track, steep and scrubby though but lots of fun in the snow! (also pics below)

My favourite area for winter is the Central Plateau, especially around Lake Meston, Myrtle and Junction. Heading up to the Lake Chalice plateau later this month!!

I'll add my vote to the previously mentioned Pine Valley + South Cape Rivulet.

Just spent the June Long weekend up at Shadow Lake (well there was less rain up there than Hobart!), which was really pretty, even in the mist + drizzle.
Mt Field area is worth exploring (there are plenty of seldom-populated areas once you get past the Tarn-Shelf day-walkers).
Arm River Track is a goodun - and Pelion hut is a good base camp with numerous options depending on the weather.
The Walls is pretty magical too - recommend a circuit into Dixons Kingdom via Lk Adelaide / Lk Ball, then out the main track.

I suppose all these highland options carry with them a disclaimer in terms of snow-cover and being aware and sensible of any deteriorating weather conditions.

I have to agree with NickD and highly recommend the Lake Myrtle track, was up there on the long weekend just gone........on the edge of Lake Myrtle has to be one of the best spots around for pitching a tent in winter! (also very enjoyable walking throughout that area).

that does look like an exceptional camp site!

It can be cold there. We couldnt camp out there, the wind was freezing as it came of Myrtle This was August last year.

Also it took us five hours to walk to Meston, snow was deep.

But if you don't like the snow, there's always the Leeaberra Track. For something a little different.
