Good thing you pointed it out. I almost missed it... they've done such a good job of getting it to blend in.

I expect they will move it around and rent out the advertising space

I shouldn't complain. Nobody's allowed to go and see it anyhow.

It was a lovely day up here - sun, no wind and snow on the ground. I think most of it will be gone by tomorrow though.

A southerly blast overnight has deposited snow on our higher peaks, plenty on Black Bluff, through to the Western Tiers.
Will be interesting to see how much we get this week.
Keep warm and safe.

Murchison Highway? & 'Moina'?? or Leary's Corner- 'Moina'? (separate from advice for 'Belvoir' Road)

Such a shame to loose the webcam, it could be re-positioned?

I had to ski to work this morning... at sea level!

Well, since I'm working from home, I didn't HAVE to.

Heading up to Cradle on the weekend. I'm anticipating good things!

Good cover up higher, hoping to get back up again somewhere early next week, the traffic could get a bit chaotic over the weekend.

Lots of people on the tracks around Cradle over the weekend, playing in the snow. And the vast majority had Australian accents! Weird.

Cradle was lovely over the weekend... clear skies, barely a breath of wind, lots of the white stuff and surprisingly not that many people about, all things considered.

We were there Friday-Sunday, camped at Little Tarn in half a metre of snow. Summit'd Saturday and bumped into a couple of ice climbers who'd bivvy'd up there, bit of a crowd heading up as we came back down including one, ahem, tourist in gumboots and a boombox blasting out his pump track (for *&^%$# sake..). Went down to Waterfall Valley to check out the new hut and ended up staying inside as we had a whole wing to ourselves - only two other souls there, which was a surprise. New hut is flash but definitely well executed, and certainly appreciated in winter anyway.

Walked out yesterday and worked up a sweat it was that warm. Snow starting to crust up and fade over Marions, but a lot of what's underneath is still powder. Tracks are now well plowed but on Friday/Saturday I was using snow shoes a lot and still sinking a fair bit.

Will post up some pics over the coming days when I get a chance. Suffice to say it was once-in-a-lifetime (maybe) conditions out there. Wouldn't wanted to have been anywhere else ;-)

Fun times. No camping in the 'Day-walk' area. It's set aside for walks that can be completed in a day

We were just outside the Day Use Only boundary, in a 'known' if not widely advertised area ;-)

Camping on the mountain itself is a bit of a grey area admittedly, probably not the sort of thing to be encouraged for both safety and environmental reasons. A few souls probably possess the ability to truly leave no trace though your average OLTer isn't amongst them.

I don't altogether agree with the rules but it is clearly marked on maps and on site that there's no camping between dove lake and waterfall valley. Not so grey unfortunately.

Well south and west of that area ILUVSWTAS. Confirmed OK with the two rangers we met whilst out there. Like I said, not advertised but accepted so long as you take everything (including human waste) with you. Left only snowshoe prints in the snow.

So, in a worse case scenario, now 'Little Tarn' is trashed. There's regulations and rangers, redundant here. (think I'm a type Three :) )

Unless you consider the tent-sized hole in the snow we left 'trashing' a place, no. Little Tarn is a colloquial name, I've never seen it identified on a map. The people who know, know, and I get the feeling you guys are talking about another area anyway.

Well, I'd only be guessing myself. We could play fFnd that Tarn?? :) (jj)

Personally I was thinking of the bivvy guys you mentioned, and then back to another recent winter epic involving camping up high (and shared freely).

Agreed. For photographers or videographers after certain shots over night or early morning, I can understand... but probably not the sort of thing that should be advertised or encouraged for general walkers.

More snow predicted from tonigh so rug up and keep safe.

A story from the Advocate newspaper

https://www.theadvocate.com.au/story/68 ... ems/?cs=12

State-of-the-art weather and climate monitoring equipment has been built in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

One of the stations has been installed in the Cradle Valley, and a second has been placed near the Davey River.

The stations will allow for better real-time observations of weather events affecting planned fuel reduction burns, and bushfire events.

HIGH TECH: The weather observation stations have been installed in the world heritage area and will improve the observations for the PWS during fire events.

A Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson said weather intelligence during fire events will be "dramatically improved".

"The up-to-date data will reduce the reliance on forecast predictions based on data gathered further afield at Low Rocky Point and Scotts Peak," the spokesperson said.

The new stations will also help keep the state's firefighters safe.
