Cradle Mountain Snow Reports

Postby Overlandman » Fri 23 Mar, 2012 7:44 am

Just wanted to let you know that it is snowing at Cradle this morning. The snow is settling on the ground from Leary's Corner & into the park.

*sigh*

So, all the sunshine was before I got there, and the snow after I left. The only way to get the timing right is to move back down there.

Can anyone offer me a job . . . ?

I was there 5 weeks ago and it was a slog in the hot, burning sun across the plains to climb Oakleigh.

Tasmanian weather.... WOW!

Snow Closes Roads

Postby Overlandman » Sat 12 May, 2012 1:08 pm

The Overland track & Cradle Mountain received a good Snowfall over night with the Road to Dove Lake closed to all traffic & Belvoir Road closed between Leary's corner & the Murchison Highway. Mount Roland is also white today.

Perhaps rather than create a new topic every time it snows you could have them merged and just update the one topic or we will end up with a lot of 'It's snowing today' topics? Just a thought.

Hoping that someone from the Cradle area might be able to keep me updated on the snow conditions over the weekend?
Planning on coming up early next week to trial some new skis and snowshoes if the conditions allow.

Cheers!

I just had a look at the Cradle Mountain Snow cam, looks like there was a good snowfall over night, there are no road closures at present (Tasmanian Police Community Alerts). More snow is predicted down to 700m tonight (Weatherzone). Click on the link & scroll down until you see the snow cam photo. On a fine day you can see Cradle Mountain through the gap in between the trees in the centre of the picture.

Quote from Tasmanian Police Community Alerts

Parks and Wildlife Service advise that the road system from The Ranger's Station at Cradle Mountain, south towards Dove Lake, is not accessible to two-wheel-drive vehicles, due to snow cover.

Hello Dee, (are you the same dee that I met at Freycinet doing the climbing with alex??)

I just came back from Marions Lookout. There is not that much up there maybe 30 cm or so. It's really really windy. I think it will snow throughout the night so we may get a bit more but it will stop tomorrow. I would be surprised if there is enough to ski on in a week or so. But who knows, cradle weather is very confusing. Maybe some of the drifts will be good.

Oh by the way, the road closure is mis leading. I got to work at 11am and there was no snow at all on the road and almost none on the grass plains. There was a bit of black ice near the creek so they closed it. Open to all right now.
