Hey Dee, I didn't read your post properly. If you are coming up tomorrow it will probably be good.

Hey, don't know if you made it up, if not you didn't miss much. There is not much around today except for the drifts at the base of cradle and that is more like ice than snow.

Anyone know what its like up on the plateau? I'm doing a walk starting on Monday and wrestling with the snowshoe conundrum. I know the weather is variable but a first hand account of what its like above 1000 meters would help me in my risk assessment.

Cix, are you doing the full OT? Or just a wander on the plateau?? if it was me doing the full OT, at 1.3 kg there's no way i'd take them as they would only get used for what, half a day??
Nothing to see here.

Gonna do the walls, then head for junction lake via Meston, through the never, never to Kiaora, then up to Cradle mountain. I thought the heaviest snow would be in the walls, pelion gap
between Windemere and waterfall valley hut and then up on the cradle plateau.

I once spent the whole day post holing through 1.5 meter snow from Kitcheners to waterfall valley. After 10 hours I was pretty shagged.

Jees how big are your Yowies my M size only weigh 1.082 g  all that aside if you do experience deep snow on the Plateau and dont take them it is a long struggle even to Kitchen Hut as you mentioned, your choice.

Iam on the coast this morning, fairly frosty.
Looking at the Cradle Mountain web cam (good to see its working) there is a fair snow cover on the ground. There are no road closures on the Tasmanian Police web site.
Regards Overlandman

Edit,, Snow has almost melted by 2:15pm at the Cabins web cam.

Went through today heading from Strahan to Sheffield. There is snow on the ground on the Vale of Belvoir and on Middlesex Plains.

We actually drove Belvoir Rd (between Cradle and the Murchison Hwy) on Monday afternoon - heading from Cradle Lodge to Strahan and unaware the road was meant to be 4WD only. There was no indication of this at the Cradle end. I think they were being a touch overcautious. The road was perfectly navigable in a 2WD, although at much reduced speed. We didn't exceed 40kph on that section.
This makes me the first man to climb Mount Everest backwards, without oxygen...or even a jumper.

Cradle Mountain Snow Reports

Postby Ent » Sun 26 Aug, 2012 10:59 am

This weekend struck a group at Kiosra that needed snow shoes around Cradle. Pelion Gap had some snow on the ground plus falling snow but it melted on contact.

Looking at the Parks Dove Lake Car park webcam, there is a good snow cover today.
Road is still open to all vehicles but extreme caution must be used.

They clearly don't police the road closure very strictly. At 10 am, CML was full of motorcyclists who had ridden up for a day in the snow.
