English Tourist dies at Cradle Mountain

Postby Overlandman » Tue 20 Mar, 2012 12:28 pm

Quote from ABC News site,
"An English tourist has died from a suspected heart attack after walking to the Cradle Mountain summit.

It is believed the 51-year-old man was walking with a group when he fell ill yesterday.

He was treated by an off-duty paramedic and members of the group but attempts to save him were unsuccessful.

The rescue helicopter was unable to land because of bad weather so police hiked in and stayed with the body overnight.

Inspector Kim Steven says more officers will help bring the body down in the steep and difficult terrain.

"There'll be a number of areas where they'll have to lower the body in the stretcher over rocks and boulders and it's not just simply a carry."

"So there's a lot of rope work going to be involved in that first part of it as well, so it's quite a technical move that they're going to have to do.

"They train for this on regular occasions," he said".

Very Sad, Sympathy to his family & friends,
RIP

Cradle Mountain walker death
Tuesday, 20 March 2012 - 9:50am

At approximately 2pm yesterday, Monday 19 March, emergency services were notified of a man at the summit of Cradle Mountain who required urgent medical attention.

The man was treated by an off duty paramedic who was also walking on the mountain, he was assisted in providing CPR by several other walkers but unfortunately their attempts to save the man were unsuccessful.

The Westpac rescue helicopter was on its way to Cradle Mountain yesterday but was unable to land due to weather conditions.

Two Search & rescue officers were flown into Kitchen Hut late yesterday and walked to the summit where they stayed with the body overnight.

This morning, a further ground crew of Police S&R and SES personnel are walking to the summit to assist with the retrieval of the body as weather conditions have again prevented any use of the helicopter, however if the conditions improve, the helicopter usage will be reassessed.

The deceased was a 51 year old man from the United Kingdom and the NOK are being notified through our International Liaison officers.

He was walking with a companion, also from the UK, who is now off the Mountain.

Hard work for the rescue party there. Hats off to them.

Sympathies to the family and friends.
