Snow Report for WOJ and OT

Postby cixelsyd » Mon 26 Sep, 2011 7:01 pm

Hi All,

I'm getting ready to start a walk and I'm wondering what the conditions are like near the Walls and at Cradle Mountain? Is there much snow at the moment?
I use some of the weather sites for Tassie but I guess I trust this forum more than those weather sites.

Regards

Thanks ILUVSWTAS

what's your opinion on snow shoes. I know conditions can change for better or worse on a moment down there. I'm just trying to get a feel for what to pack. i have a pair of yowies I've never used.
I wouldn't mind having to use them, I guess taking them and not using them feels heavy.

I can only speak of my own experience last week at pine valley. we had alot of snow on the acropolis, but snow shoes would have been useless. it was all fresh snow and quite sludgy. Alot of cold nights since then so maybe it has frozen again, hopefully someone has been up there in the last day or 2 and can answer more appropriately.

I just came back from Marions to Kitchen hut and back via face track and Hansons.

There is NO snow. As in none.

We crossed one pissy drift on the face track that has been there since June and that is all. Late winter sucked.

Hey Joel,

thanks for the update. I start my next walk on the 12th. Can't wait. I wouldn't mind a 10 cm dump just before I get there just to freshen it up.
I doesn't look like anything is forecast for the next week though. My wife and I are staying at the chateau on the 20 and 21, then going to Freixenet for a few nights.

All my best

Interesting. Had a fair bit fall over the past few nights in the SW. Hartz in particular looked very white this morning. It was a warm day today though so alot had melted by the time i'd left at midday.

I think you could be right cixelsyd.

Thew weather is really beautiful and should be for the next few days. We had the on/off snow for a few days last week but too much rain in between for anything to stick around.

who knows though.

Anyone have a wander in the southern end of the Cradle Lake St Clair Reserve over the weekend; any white stuff sitting around? I can't imagine there'd be much after the warm weather and the forecast for the next few days...........

I'd be frigging amazaed if there was. I did Cradle Summit today and there is none at all up there and doesn't seem to be any on Ossa.
It's been really hot, I was in shorts and t shirt today.

I was up Ossa today and there is a big patch of snow near the summit which a little tricky to pass.

well, that doesn't surprise me much.

I just got back from my first Overland. Woohoo! The weather was amazing, although I was hoping for some snow. As already explained, the only snow found was up Ossa.

Perfect blue skies for most of the trip, the only light drizzle we had was the last 10 minutes as we walked into Lake St Clair visitor centre! Bushwalking gods blessed us! :P

Hey cixelsyd, you might have timed your walk very well. Looks like 3 days of snow 9th, 10th and 11th. I think you may have your 10cms. Keep your fingers crossed I guess.

Thanks Joel.

I've been watching. I love walking through 5 to 10 cm of snow. Its just enough to give it that "winter wonderland" feel, but not enough to make it hard.

I can't wait.

I agree, a small amount is lovely but a lot can kill you. I hope you get that small 5 -10cm to give the wonderland feel, not that the WOJ needs it.

Talk about good timing cixelsyd!

I think you might even have more than 10cms.
The weather at Cradle right now is nuts. Really windy tough...

I fly out today to launie then to the start at tne WOJ. I'll probably see some snow the first or second day, but it looks like it could melt pretty fast if the forecasts are correct.
