No problem with either. Those rules only apply if doing the whole OT and if doing it during the buys half of the year.

Thanks Nik, wasn't too sure after reading that the booking time starts as of the 1st of november.

I have emailed tassie parks but as yet have had no reply.

They answered it here.
Walking just a part of the track?
During the peak walking season, bookings are only required for those walking the entire track in a single journey.
If you are walking just a section of the track, you are not considered to be part of the Overland Track experience. We are aware that people do like to walk small sections of the track, quite often as part of a much larger journey, and where suitable facilities are available, this use can continue.

They also say in the FAQ
Can I walk just a section of the Overland Track?
A number of day and overnight walks are available from Lake St Clair and Cradle Mountain. Some of these include sections of the Overland Track. Please phone (03) 6233 6047 or check with Cradle Mountain or Lake St Clair Visitor Centres for further information.

Though exempt from a fee and allowing you to start from Lake St Clair, you will of course still need a Parks pass.

Most stuff you need to know can be found here.
Enjoy!
