Which Jacket

Postby mark electric » Sun 13 Nov, 2016 7:07 am

Hi all,
I start walking OLT for the first time as a solo hiker.
Step off on the 25 Nov 16.
I am fully aware I am a Queenslander going to a place with rapidly changing weather conditions. I have 3 Jackets here (fine for QLD) but I think I will need a Hard rain / wind shell. Any comments on what type before I spend my money would be much appreciated.
I am re oiling my oil skin jacket today.
Thanks from Mark.
I walk, shuffle then hobble.

Hi Mark,

Forget the oilskin, too heavy.

The list is endless on which hard shell to buy.

Make sure you don't buy one that is lined.

I have none of these but if money is no object I like the look of the Norrona recon
https://www.norrona.com/en-GB/products/ ... ro-jacket/

And the far cheaper but still pricey Earth Sea Sky Hydrophobia(with added under arm vents).

Cheaper again is the Mountain Designs Storm King, it is only the bog stock Gore Tex and has no pit vents but for $350 it seems to represent decent value.

All the jackets I have linked have traditional flaps over the pockets as I have found rubberised zippers to be hard to operate one handed and mine have leaked.

I hate rain pants so I prefer a longer jacket.

Which Jacket

The Marmot Precip is light, effective, affordable and readily available.

It was more than adequate for me on three solo crossings of the OLT.

That one is light, I had it on my watch list. Good to hear it performed well for you.

If it were me I wouldn't hesitate. There was a recent thread about the jackets on here somewhere.

Hi Mark,

If the small fits, order it now. I purchased the same jacket early this year and used it in Tassie for a week in April.

Have used it many times since and it is a great jacket. I they had my size I would be buying another two of them.

Macpac have some pretty crazy prices at the moment, not sure how well the newer membanes work. They do seem to have little rubber boots on the wire for the peaks and some have flaps over pockets which is cool, can't imagine the ones on the Phrophet would stop water getting through the zips though.
