FIVE new helipads have been built on the Overland Track to increase the safety of walkers and search and rescue aircrews.

Parks and Wildlife Service acting Northwest Region manager Brendon Clark said the helipads have a working load of five tons and safer boardwalks for approaches and departures.

They have replaced the former timber helipads at a cost of $250,000.

Mr Clark said helicopters and the helipads are a lifeline for the Overland Tracks — a remote area with no road access.

“We rely on helicopters for delivering supplies and for search and rescue operations,’’ he said.

The Tasmanian Air Rescue Trust funded the helipads attached to overnight huts at Windermere, Pelion, Kia Ora, Windy Ridge and Pine Valley.

They've done a good job on designing and building these new platforms. Some of the old ones were a bit dodgy. Maybe need snow poles for the access tracks too ;

Phew.
The headline had me thinking they were extra, but these are the replacement platforms. Had a good squiz at the one at Waterfall a little while back. Very impressive.
