Chorals work inspired by Cradle Mountain will be performed by Devonport’s Crescendo Choir at the Cradle Mountain Interpretation on Sunday.

Composed by Paul Jarman and Bonnie Nilsson, the song cycle was written to evoke the relationship between conservationists Gustav and Kate Weindorfer, and the rugged landscape they helped protect.

The composers were artists-in-residence at Cradle Valley in 2014, where they “lit the fire and walked every day on a different track” – and reads “hundreds and hundreds” of pages of research on the Weindorfers, Jarman said.

“For this particular song cycle, it was not just the landscape but it was really more about the people.

“In an interesting way, Kate and Gustav were like the landscape.

“They had the rustic romantic charm of days gone by, it was the period leading up to World War I, it was the last romantic period.”

The pieces, which were composed with input from members of the choir during workshops at Cradle Mountain, have a melody which makes them accessible, Jarman said.

The lyrics were written so they can be sung by the fire, as the Weindorfers would have done.

“We wanted to make the music accessible for everyone for a start because that’s what Cradle Mountain is because of them.

“Of course we wanted to capture the environment musically so there is a little sounds that are reminiscent of Debussy, Revel and Vaughn Williams, that classic romantic period coupled with folk melodies.”

Jarman and Nilsson’s research revealed a bohemian couple – a renaissance man and a respected botanist.

“You can tell from the diaries and all the research we did hanging out at Gustav’s place would have been a lot of fun, they look like proactive people that got into life in every way.”

The Mountain will be performed by the Crescendo Choir at the Cradle Mountain Interpretation Centre on Sunday, June 26 at 1.30pm. Tickets are $15 and available from the Devonport Book Shop on 6424 3871.
