Transport 6/2 Lake St Clair to Hobart

Postby Tedmo » Mon 25 Jan, 2016 2:30 pm

Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone can make any suggestions on getting back from Lake St Clair on Saturday 6th of Feb to Hobart. The public services such as tassielink don't operate on a Saturday and I've spoke to McDermott, Tasmanian Hikes, etc. and had no luck organising transport through them for 2 people. Is there any other services that I'm missing out on, can't seem to find any more options (pretty much planning on moving to Tasmania and starting a Uber-like service for the OLT at this point...). I think it may just be a matter of taking an extra day and catching the tassielink on Sunday but any info would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Ted

I've done the OLT using Tassielink but it's important for walkers to realise they need to plan their walk around the bus schedules.

However I have also used the services of Graham Mclean of Tasmanian Wildeness Services, even staying at his very comfortable Base Camp at New Norfolk. Give them a try.

Transport is hard to find because of real little demand,if it was viable a commercial operator would have it covered ,some want to return to Cradle some to Launceston and some to Hobart.
To give you an example it is around a 6 hour return journey to St Clair and back from Launceston.about the same for Hobart and 8 from Devonport St Clair ,Cradle and back.
Do the calculation, could you do your Uber Service on standby demand for just a couple of passengers ??

Hobart to Lake St Clair is 1 hour 40 mins one way. Nowhere near 6 hours return.

Depends on weather and how you drive.

Give or take a few minutes NNW. I've driven that road over 1000 times - its close enough.

With respect strider the distance is 174 km odd so even at 100km ph(which is not sustainable) it would take you 1.74 hours which does not take into account Traffic on the Brooker nor weather conditions ,perhaps I was stretching the time however what is the point you are trying to make ?? and sheesh a trip to and from StClair to Hobart 500 times did you have a job there or at the Mines on the WC?

According to Google maps it would take 2 hours 23 minutes without traffic. Of course that would change depending on what part of Hobart you drive to.

Yes I worked on the West Coast for 6.5 years, Corvus. Not in the mines though.

Thanks Ronk (and everyone else), I've contacted Tasmanian Wilderness Services and they are the only company I haven't had a definite no from yet (haven't heard back) so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

The idea of hitching sounds tempting, do many locals go up to do the day walks in the area? As I'll have accommodation booked in Hobart I probably won't risk not getting a ride and losing a few hundred though...

Hi Ted,

Try Paul at Outdoor Tasmania. We are using his services in April. He is based in Launceston but can do Hobart from Lake St Clair I believe.

Thanks John, I'd missed that option in my search. Will make some enquiries now.
