Overland Track July Gear List

Postby canthardlywait » Fri 03 Jul, 2015 1:04 pm

Hey Guys, here is my gear list for OT over 7 days, 6 nights. I'm sharing the heavier gear with another, and i've taken that into account for the total weights below. All our dinners and snacks are dehydrated. The total is about 16.6kg but that's also including the gear I will be wearing, ie. walking poles, gaitors, clothes. So I think it will look more like 15kg when I start next week.
Any suggestion to cut back or if you think I am missing something important let me know.

I would have a look at your clothing as it seam a little over the top to me
You have one set of night pants but then 2 sets of thermal pants, why not loose the night pants and just use your thermal pants as night pants with another pair over the top if needs be.
Sam goes for your tops. I would have thought a good set up would be a base layer merino that you have on 24/7, a 200 weight fleece and then a down or synthetic puffer jacket. Maybe add an extra base layer merino for emergencies or if you get wet. Remember you going to have your rain jacket as extra to all that on top.

Yes, 16.5kg (without water) is a lot of weight for a female. In fact it's more than I carried last time.
You do need to look hard to see what you can pare.

I think your list is pretty good. Yes your clothing is a bit on the safe side, maybe its better to be safe than sorry if its very wet trip though.
You toiletries looks a bit heavy but I am a bloke so I probably fall short in this area, Also 170g bra seems heavy but again I just let my man boobs free ;)

Your food is a touch on the light side for me but I do like my food.

Nice list. Any provisions for walking in possible heavy snow?

Heres mine I used (or something very close to it) on my April OLT.

And at the risk of giving myself a shameful plug here are some riveting youtube vids of my gear etc for the OLT.

Thanks for the tips, hopefully I'll cull a few things from the list.
I'll have a look through the toiletries at what I can leave out. The toiletries weight also includes a few first aid bits and pieces.
I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to layering and I don't own a down jacket hence the two fleeces.

The two fleeces make sense, as I did notice the lack of a down jacket.

The multitude of base layers can definitely be trimmed back, though. One for walking and one for sleeping is the usual loadout.

I'm going to hijack a bit for related questions, but first I will try and help the OP :)

-600g a day sounds a little light to me for food, especially since it's winter and extra calories are needed for warmth? not heaps, but like I'd be 700-750g territory...
-Does the '3' in your sleeping bag name imply three season? Silk liners don't add much warmth and that combo might not cut it... Similarly, unless the TAR pad is an XTherm you might need some extra foam on top.

My, hopefully useful, additional questions are:
-My girlfriend and I are walking in ~3 weeks, carrying a tent, but sleeping in huts. We'll both be carrying 60g fill synthetic puffy hoodies (Arcteryx Atom LT and Pata Nano Puff respectively) because they are nice to throw on at stops in whatever weather and walk in if need be (vs down which is a bit precious). This will be in addition to the usual 100 weight fleece and merino top each. I'm a bit nervous about how cold evenings may get, and had been thinking of throwing in a UL down jacket (or maybe vest?) each as well as insurance... wise or unnecessary weight with the hut heaters and a warm sleeping bag setup to escape to?

-Second one, had been planning on just taking microspikes, unless a BIG dump happens in which case I'd hire some snow shoes. Current conditions *look* microspikes friendly, with the logic that if it does dump a bit a couple of km of postholing on the high parts of the track won't kill us... Does this seem fair or do people err on the side of bringing snow shoes? Heavy if you don't use them...

You can't rely on all the huts having fuel in winter. If you have room to carry a down jacket/vest for evenings, do so.

Personally, I'd take snowshoes just in case, but it is a bit of a coin toss situation. There's no way of knowing what the weather will do - except that snow is almost guaranteed if you aren't prepared for it.

You will be pushing it for comfort in the evenings in Tassie with this combo. Regardless of season.

You have two options here guess - either invest in a warmer insulating layer, or go to bed earlier before it gets too cold.

I agree with Strider
Maybe a 200 weight fleece instead of the 100 would make it ok but you would be pretty early to bed with that set up!
I don't really think its unsafe by the way. In an emergency its your tent/sleeping bag/mat that are going to keep you alive this is why its so important you have practice at putting your tent up in bad conditions.

Yeah sweet - I just tried on a combo of merino + 100w fleece + patagonia UL hoody + atom LT hoody.. layers surprisingly well (insulation isn't crushed) and seems like a versatile combo vs just a heavier down jacket.. so I'll chuck in the extra 275g :)

I'll work something out for the gf - might be putting in a call to borrow a mate's mens small down sweater...

As a side note, I agree that 600g a day for food is lighter than I would do.
Doesn't mean its not possible, its just not something I would do. I like chocolate, nuts etc too much

Microspikes would be great for ice on the boardwalks in the mornings. More boardwalks on the track every year..

Grab her an Aldi down jacket. They went on sale today. Or a Uniqlo one if you want to spend a little bit more.

The 600g is still relatively calorie dense. I dehydrated the meals and the snacks are very calorie rich. I'm looking at about 2400 calories per day.

Also the sleeping bag is 4 season. Sea to summit trek 3.

Lose some of the fleece, buy a down jacket. This also doubles as a pillow, so you can ditch that as well.
