Downloadable Overland Track Book

frank_in_oz has just released his downloadble eBook, 'Hiking the Overland Track'. I've had a read through it and it is an excellent resource for people who are looking to walk the Overland Track, and I highly recommend it particularly for people who are not experienced bushwalkers, or who are not familiar with Tasmania.

It includes a wide variety of topics to help people get organised for their Overland Track walk, not just track notes for the walk itself. Some of the topics covered include:
  • Flights, bus trips and accommodation, park fees, track booking and track fees
  • Gear, food, brief track notes, and references to other sources of information (including Bushwalk Tasmania, of course)
  • Dealing with animals from possums to snakes, minimal impact walking, maps, etc

There's a lot of good tips, including:
Tip: Even though Tasmania is a small State, travel times, rather than distance, are often important when planning your journey. It is a mountainous state and the roads are often narrow and very winding, average driving speed may be 60km per hour.
and
Non MSR cylinders are USUALLY available at the Information Centre at Cradle Mountain – ring and check they have supplies before you get there they DO RUN OUT.

The book is based on the experiences of Frank and other non-Tasmanians who've done the Overland Track many times between them, and coalesces and builds on many of the articles at Frank's 'Our Hiking Blog'.

The eBook costs AUD $7 to download, and 10% from every eBook sold will be donated to the Tasmanian Wilderness Society.
