Take this wonderful opportunity to come into the arms of Canon.....

But seriously- the best resource I know for that sort of info is http://www.dpreview.com - they have a forum as well as their comprehensive review articles.

Now don't get me wring, I love a Canon, but that new D700 they just came out with is one sweet camera....

It's for THE BIG WHITE LENSES. No one gets out of your way at the zoo or on a trail if you're carrying around one of those wimpy little black nikon tubes. But oh baby, you pull out that big white baby 100-400, and they scamper away to a safe distance and peer around trees at you, muttering things like "Ohhh- now that's a REAL camera," or "Look honey, he's a professional..."

:-)

Actually, I went Canon because I prefer their picture style, and the comparable gear is cheaper than Nikon- that extra 30% cost of Nikon gear's a killer. also, when I went into digital slrs (actually, when I got my wife one, which then subsequently led to my addiciton), Nikon had nothing even remotely comarable to Canon's line up. They've only come out with something comparable to the 5D this year, and the 5D is what, three years old? BUT, the new stuff from Nikon- the D700 and the D3, are pretty sexy. Still, if you are looking at buying a whole new system, lenses and all, and you want professional results on a budget, Nikon's really got nothing to compare to the 450D, the 40D or a 5D, all of which are something like the value of a lens cheaper than Nikon's rival, and in some casess (450D, 40D), I reckon superior.

But at the end of the day they all take great pictures.

All of your lens' are manual focus i assume? if so then the d40 is find...*&%$#! good choice in fact when you consider its size/weight. Im a big fan of the d40...it was always my favourite SLR to sell in last job...its underrated. I love my d50...and still prefer it to the d80 I also own...and the d40 is smaller, lighter and more modern than the d50.

That new Nikon D90 is pretty sweet, but the problem I have with all Nikon stuff is that you can buy the base model Canon DSLR and a couple of lenses for less that the base model Nikon, an d the image quality is comparable.

Nuts wrote:Put a 'rolling' bid on 12 d40x's on ebay @$326us. When I missed them all I lost heart and have put it off short term. My lenses are all early AF(used with F50) and I gather the AF wont work unless they are the AFS models or later? Which made me start to think about the D80 (which will take all lenses) and will be a similar price soon enough.

The cheaper end Cannon look and feel inferior to cheaper end Nikkon? :D

I don't know how the compare Nuts. A quick trip to the camera sotre can solve a lot of dilemmas!

Try looking through the photography forums on line for used cameras- Fred Miranda is commonly used. Also, try http://www.adorama.com, http://www.bhphotovideo.com and especially http://www.keh.com, all who sell used bodies.

http://www.keh.com has a number of D50's in the mid $300's. I've never bought from them, but they come very highly recommended from a whole range of different people.

I'd personally buy your D50, and if you get back into it, upgrade either to a Canon or Nikon eventually. You'll sell your D50 for almost as much as you bought it for.

Remember, the focal length of your lenses is multiplied by 1.5 on most Nikon digital SLRs. In other words, a 50mm lens actually gives you the image you'd get with a 75mm lens. Great for wildlife photography, a bit limiting for landscapes. That's why ultrawide angle lenses like 10-20mm zooms have become so popular. My sigma 10-20 gives me the same perspective as a 16-32mm lens (Canon's focal length multiplier is 1.6, not 1.5)

Sorry to keep posting on this thread- but I'm doing a bit of shopping with your money. I'd DEFFINITELY buy a D80 over a D50- http://www.keh.com has them in the mid-400's, and the difference between 6mp and 10mp is pretty pronounced. You'd be...well....nuts not to spend the extra 100-150 on the D80. That'd be a camera that would last you for years!

I have the d80 and the d50....and the d50 is what is usually in my hands...if im walking its what i always take...at the last wedding i shot I had the d80 and my wife had the d80....there was no complaints from customer. The d50 is an incredibly capable camera, whilst still being small and light. If you can score one of those for sub $450 grab it. d80 will be a while before they drop below 500 id say. early next year I will consider selling my d80 maybe depending on how successful the wedding season is this year...its looking good so far.

Can't help but adding to this... What kind of sports convertible do you drive??? (C'mon, you surely knew that was coming - from a Nikon user...)

Back to the original question, http://www.dslrusers.com/index.php is a good Australian forum for honest talk of such things.

And I have a D70 with a small problem, that I will sell cheap if you are interested you're welcome to come have a play and make me an offer. Still works and all.. But with two D200's in the family, it lives inthe cupboard.

From the dslr forum, I did a bit of a search and found these links that you might find interesting.
