Tripod Leg Sling (thing)?????

Postby Nuts » Thu 28 Jan, 2010 9:38 pm

Any better suggestions as to what it might be called....?
Iv'e seen a nylon triangle/strap setup between a tripod legs (acts as a 'platform'/'bag' that you can add weight too in order to stabilise a tripod) There's a commercially made one about but i'm having trouble finding it..... :?

My tripod has a hook where weight can be added for stability. Anything will do - a 4 litre water bladder works well (4 kg's when full), or a pack, or anything else. One idea is a bit of line with some netting attached. Bird netting is light and packs to nothing, or maybe even a hair net like they are supposed to use behind the deli at the supermarket... If it is strong enough to carry the weight of a rock of appropriate size to add enough support weight.
I've never seen a specialised sling just for this purpose.

Thanks Adam, Iv'e used the camera bag before but have just bought a smaller lightweight tripod. It is sturdy but probably only to a point and thought that putting equal pressure/weight on the three legs might be a better idea. I have seen a fabric triangular 'sling' that just clipped around inside the legs at the first section break. I guess putting weight on the bottom of the centre column may be just as good. mine doesnt have any attachment point (i guess cos it needs to slide out to be inverted)... (perhaps i could drill a couple of holes and put a light caribiner through the bottom of the centre column.. i liked the triangular thing though as it pulls in and sturdies the legs with weight added)

Well, there's these two:

Trek Tech Cammock Tripod Gear Shelf US$24.41

Flashpoint Tripod Weight Bag US$10.95

I haven't seen either in Australia. I have seen a few homespun versions that work just as well though.

Those look a bit bulky. I made up a length of ocky strap with a hook each end that is about 1/2 the length of the distance from base of head to earth when hung from two points on the extended tripod. I then put my boot on the loop and it pulls the strap very taut as my boot meets the ground. No rocks or weights needed. I get sharp images at the dreaded 1/15 sec. so it works for me!

Yer, ive always just hung the camera bag over the tripod. I just bought a small tripod that i dont think would handle much weight that wasnt even. The okky strap is a novel idea!
