How Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO Work

If you’re a beginner photographer, it can be helpful to have a simple guide that helps you understand the different settings that you can toggle on your DSLR camera. While this helpful exposure chart by Daniel Peters at Fotoblog Hamburg won’t explain HOW the optics of photography work, it will show you exactly what happens when you tweak your camera’s settings.

The three settings in this chart are part of what photographers like to call the exposure triangle. ISO is the digital camera sensor’s sensitivity to light. The aperture is a structure in your lens that works much like the iris in our eyes. It opens and close to let more or less light in, and also changes the depth of field, or how many different objects can remain in focus in the shot at the same time. Last is the shutter speed, which controls how much time the camera’s shutter remains open when taking a photo. A longer shutter opening will let in more light but may also cause blurring if any motion occurs while the photo is being taken.

Big number, small hole.

Surprisingly difficult concept to communicate...

If you can remember watts/amps/volts, you can remember ISO/shutter speed/aperture.

Have digital camera now with a silicone brain to do the maths for me now.
My car also changes the gears for me as well while I do other things but I try not to think about it too much... ;)

I used to find photography much more fun when I had to think about it! I suppose I should start thinking about it again...............but I can't find the ISO/aperture/exposure settings on my iphone...

It's odd isn't it! Now that we don't have to wait and pay for film processing wouldn't you think it would be more fun now to experiment with ISO/ aperture/exposure?
Perhaps camera manufacturers will eventually give us again those options when they run out of the other more useless new features in the inevitable newer models to come through...

I'v found photography more fun since I've freed my mind to consider and compose the scenes I shoot, rather being distracted by lens, aperture, shutter and filter selection. I produce better images now too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Did a beginners photography course last year but haven't been using my camera enough to keep it up ( e.g. forgot pretty much all I had learned). This is exactly what I needed to refresh my memory ;-)
