Standing on the extensive, flat rock in front of the Lady Lake Hut dunny, you can see Deloraine down below in the distance. So, perfect reception using a cheap, little Samsung prepaid, on Virgin Optus.
Phoned in my Thursday Report and headed off to Nameless.

Mt Spent, Mt Secheron, Mt Frankland all have 2 bar of reception on a nexus 4 on the 850mhz Telstra next g network.

No other mountains on the Frankland-Wilmot range worked for me.

Definitely no reception on iPhone 4S on top of the New Harbour Range in fine weather.

Interested in anyone with OPTUS having coverage in the Traveller Range or DuCane Range vicinity. I'd like to know ASAP please.

Just looked up their (Optus) coverage map and it would appear that they've improved a little since my last trip. Last time, it was dead once hitting the north-south midline of the state with zilch signal to the West. Now there are some patchy areas according to their coverage map.

Last time on the OLT I found places where there was a only week (Telstra) signal still enabled me to send a text.

Can anyone comment on how Telestra coverage changes when using an American 850/900/1900/2100 capable phone (missing the popular 700 and 1800 Aussie frequencies). I know I won't be likely to get any 4G access outside of Hobart, but will regular network access elsewhere be comparable, or do coverage maps depend on frequency?

Strangest one yet. Traversing Kameruka moraine well below Precipitous Bluff, phone rings....Telstra on iPhone 5s.....almost nowhere is safe!!

Well, I found out quite by chance ('cause I was using the ancient 3S for something else) that you can actually get a signal at the Helipad (Eldon Bluff/Dome Hill base camp). Now, one expects a signal from the higher points - if you can see Read, Owen, KWI, any of the higher peaks with transmission towers, you should be able to get a signal, but none of those were visible from where I was.
So Kameruka doesn't surprise me that much, although I had trouble getting a consistent signal from the top of PB (admittedly in very overcast conditions). Presumably something was bouncing around from the tower on Mt Wedge?

itsaracket, according to a site on the web, Telstra run 850 & 2100 on 3G.
I am fairly confident Tas was mostly covered by 3G.
We had good coverage on the peaks of the Western Arthurs in 2009, before 4G was launched.

PS - try this coverage map site with the Detailed view - it can select for 3G coverage only.
But I believe it is a bit conservative - and signal can be picked up as others have suggested, in some unusual spots.

Rarely carry a mobile but I was able to make phone calls at Humboldt Peak, Princes Peak and at the high ridge ~2km south of Diamond Peak. No reception at Diamond Peak itself or Observation Peak.

Location: At Cape Bruny lighthouse got 4G but no signal at old keepers residences. Elsewhere on Bruny Island, signal depends on having line of sight to Tasmanian mainland, ie generally no signal on eastern side of island. Also still no signal from top of New Harbour Range in January 2016.

On the the final peak of the last 3 hills before decending into Cape Rivulet.. theres a clearing with a fallen log.
Got full 4 bars of reception and 4G internet.
It was the only place I got pinged anywhere along the track.

iPhone 6s with Telstra 4G - got good reception from top of Tasman Island on several occasions in past few years while participating in Wildcare working bees.
