Alternative to OziExplorer (Desktop)?

Postby tom_brennan » Sat 08 Jul, 2023 2:41 pm

Does anyone have a good recommended replacement for OziExplorer (Desktop)?

The main things I am looking for are :
1. The ability to load in your own maps of various kinds
2. The ability to download and review/edit/save GPX data

OziExplorer is pretty venerable - hasn't had much in the way of upgrades in the past 15 years, though I've certainly had good value from it. Even a few little things like adding drag-and-drop for GPX files would make it significantly more useable for me.

I use QGIS a lot, and while it's great for (1), it's pretty poor for (2) because the GPX data gets split into multiple layers.

I've also used tools like GPSPrune, which are good for editing GPX files, but not great for reviewing, and no good for loading your own maps.

I use QMapShack. It's good for 2, but unfortunately not so good for 1.

I think you can georeference raster files using QMapTool, but I haven't tried it. I'm happy with my OSM maps.

Thanks Andrew - I have used QMapShack before, but only for viewing Garmin vector files.

The brief doco suggests that it can handle GDAL maps in general, so it seems worth a look. I'll report back...

I've always been a bit confused by GDAL and VRT files.

There's also free version of GPS TrackMaker (Windows only). I haven't used it in a long time, but unlike OziExplorer it still seems to being maintained.
