*.gpx track sharing site

Postby eddie the eagle » Sat 24 Apr, 2010 12:22 pm

Hi All,

Is there a site that allows users to upload *.gpx tracks of past walks and download other's *.gpx tracks?

I've come across http://www.everytrail.com but am wondering if there is a local equivalent.

Best regards,

eddie

Not sure, but this forum isn't it, in line with rule 17 -
Avoid posting detailed information on accessing sensitive areas without recognised tracks to public topics, but rather use private messages, email, or other non-public means to communicate such information instead. Feel free to ask questions about such areas publicly, so long as the post includes a reminder of this rule to get answers privately only.

Hey Eddie,
the stepwhere site has quite a few tasmanian tracks uploaded where you can download gpx files from.
http://www.stepwhere.com/listpaths/srchkey/tasmania

And from what I can tell tasadam they are all recognised tracks..

Thanks on two fronts, Adam.

Firstly, thanks for the response - yes, I'd seen that here wasn't the place for that reason. It came up in pink at the top of one of the forums I saw.

Secondly, thanks for leaving the post up - it'd be handy to get a list of waypoints/track if needed when preparing for an exploratory walk. The reason why I'd asked.

Thanks for your efforts in moderating/supervising this site.

Cheers,

eddie

edit: Nick, thanks as well. Much appreciated. We were typing at the same time.

If people wanted to, they could create an area on the wiki here to store such track files (KML too).

However, as Tasadam said, it should not include sensitive off track routes.

Hey it might be useful to share what i have found works for me....
Firstly:
there is the site: http://www.sharemyroutes.com which i and others have posted recognised track and routes onto for public downloading.
an example is here:
http://www.sharemyroutes.com/routes/Aus ... tails.aspx

but Secondly:
you can create a path in google earth freeware version (- ideally in conjunction with refering to official maps and paths as i don't really agree with bush-bashing as there are so many great tracks around already),
save the path on your computer,
then convert it to the file type your GPS uses with the freeware program ( I use GPSbabel ) then upload it onto your GPS unit and off you go.

I do this as i use a Garmin etrex H (cheaper non mapping GPS using AA batteries with a high-sensitivity antenna) this way i can still follow a track without constantly having to double check the map - i mark the paths' waypoints onto the map and can follow it through the GPS that way.
Hope this helps...
cheers, liam

Old topic. Wondering what sites people use/recommend for GPX sharing these days.
www.wikiloc.com seems quite good but what do others use?

Gpsies.com has good path-editing tools.
