NSW topos on Tyvek - Officeworks

Hey brains trust,

I am sick of my paper maps tearing, getting wet and being unruly in the wind.

I recall someone printing maps on tyvek at officeworks. I have tried for the last few hours but for the life of me I can’t get the PDF from six maps to upload to the officeworks website. It keeps saying it doesn’t fit.

I have cropped the unnecessary margins out but I don’t think it’s liking the aspect. I am resizing it to the requested size.

Has anyone done this before and willing to help?

Cheers!

I tried once in-store and first they gave me grief about copyright and then wanted to charge a small fortune.

I just use Gaia on my phone and my memory and compass these days

Thanks Crollsurf. I love Gaia but I really like planning my day on a topo and enjoy the security of having a physical map.

Maybe laminating them is the way...

Not sure if this will work but you could try resizing the pdf to the paper size your attempting to print on.

https://www.pdf2go.com/resize-pdf

(havent used this online service either)

:P

Hey Zapruda,

Any chance you could keep this thread updated and let us know the results? I've been thinking of printing some maps on the office works tyvek and would be curious to hear how it turns out.

Cheers

Following. Would love to hear how this goes. Not only the actual printing but how it holds up in the field.

I did this a couple of years ago and it works pretty well. Tyvek is thicker than paper and where you fold the map a wide crease develops which slowly breaks up the map detail. I haven't carried one for more than a couple of days.

I only printed a few small sections I generated from listmap sources with mobac software. Difficult to print to any kind of existing scale.

Easier to go into store with your file on USB, but you have to wait a few hours till it's printed usually. Make it the easiest format possible - jpg etc. Their computers are pretty poo... and always having problems. Even if you have a randomly sized jpg you can ask them to print to a specific centimetre size - I took in a geoTIFF purchased from tasmap ($2 digital 1:25000) and gave them the exact dimensions from an existing map, came out perfectly to 1:25000

For the cost and trouble I personally think it's worth printing on normal paper and laminating.
