Thoughts on Avenza maps?

Sat 25 Mar, 2017 7:44 am

I've used this a couple of times for mountain biking near Melbourne and they seem to do a great job.

Anyone used them hiking in more remote areas?

If they're okay then I'll get a solar charger to keep the phone charged for longer trips (which also helps with a few other requirements as well).

I have used these maps in Tasmania in places with no mobile reception. Use the app as a back up to paper. Work really well to get a quick position check with phone (iPhone 6) in flight mode. I like this app for this purpose better than my old GPS, but if wanting to record my track I use my GPS to save the phone's battery.

Same. A very handy ADDITION to nav tools. Particularly handy to quickly confirm exactly where you are on a paper 25k topo map.

A lot of hiking tracks, waterfalls and huts are marked on Avenza too. I love it

The free Tassie maps created by NSWTopo are brilliant. I always load them up before a walk just in case.

I take a battery backup rather than solar, well worth the weight.

Just checked my iPhone and Avenza and associated files are taking 500Mb of storage space... Ouch! Galileo Pro is on 650Mb...

Yep love these maps- very handy. Tassie free & MSW $1 something. Well worth it!
Cool distance measuring tool as well
Great for packrafting too- can mark rapids & add photos

I've tried, but there's no way to move the maps to the SD card because they're in a protected folder (to prevent people moving paid maps...) which is a shame !

Quite like this app, tested it on my way to work this morning. Thanks for mentioning it. My phone has limited storage so I'll probably keep the multiple NSW pdfs on the home PC and only transfer the required maps as needed before heading off.

It is a good app, it does everything it sets out to do. It can be limited however with phone storage and it has a limit on maps you can add from external sources.

Its not been a perfect experience for me... maps I bought a while ago from avenza though googleplay are no longer available to me since an update of the app which required an avenza password. I chased it up with avenza without much success and then I gave up.

Another problem is that maps bought though the app are locked to the app - no (not that I can see) taking the maps to your laptop and using them there.

Those problems aside, the app works great.

The limit on maps from external sources - is there a way to find out what the limit is?

On my iphone version of the app I can have up to 3 externally sourced maps at any one time.

Cheers, that could be irritating.

An older pre map limit version is available. It is somewhere in this thread on bpl https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/for-anyone-interested-in-basic-caltopo-map-making/page/2/. Then turn off auto update for the app.

Quick question...

I installed Avenza maps the other day and downloaded a couple 1:25000 maps that are situated right next to each other.

Is there a way to view both maps on the same page? (Right now I have to open each map separately which is quite annoying as the track runs straight through the middle of the two maps)

Cheers

No, if you are using georeferenced PDF maps they behave much like the corresponding paper maps. You have to switch from one to the other.

Are you on Android? If so, try something like OruxMaps. The interface is more complex than Avenza, but the NSW Topo maps work really well. If you are online, the maps are seamless across the whole state. And you can specify any area to download for offline use, without needing to consider the boundaries of the corresponding paper maps.

You can set up maps into groups so you can move from one to the other automatically

http://help.avenzamaps.com/customer/por ... s-android-

I actually can't remember how to do it off the top of my head but I have four topos with part of Cathedral in each corner and I set them up so when you walk off one it opens the next automatically.

You still can't see both at once but it does automate the opening and closing.

It's sort of a retarded user interface. If you have maps all in the same folder then you can move from one map to an adjacent one just by dragging. You can't see them at the same time but they overlap a bit so it's kind of okay. No, I'm being nice. It's retarded.

To put maps in a folder click the "edit" button on the upper right of the screen. From there you can create a new folder. Then you can select items and move them to that folder. You can also have folders within folders and they'll all be linked in the same way.

There is decent online help for Avenza. I'd have never figured this out by trial and error.

Thanks for that, clears everything up a bit haha!

I'm on iOS, not supposing there's any better apps than Avenza?

Re: Thoughts on Avenza maps?

When I first used Avenza I'm sure it used to have an arrow on the side of any map it detected had the corresponding map to line up with, and if you tapped the arrow it transferred over. Am I imagining this or maybe it was another app ?

Avenza maps locate the hut at Lake Ina in Tasmania, on the Tasmap named Ina.

But the same location viewed on the Listmap website doesn't show the hut, unless you use the very plain, "Topographic" Basemap choice in the top, right hand of the screen ( using Desktop ). The normal method is to employ the TASMAP option.

It makes me wonder what other details are missing from Listmap/Tasmaps online.

The guy that produces the maps found on avenza (with extents copied from tasmap 1:25k maps) Takes the publicly available data available from the LISTmap topographic sources. He's posted on this forum before with details, search NSWTopo. The older 'TASMAP' scanned layer on LISTMap is quite outdated and inconsistent.

There are better apps. But I'm not aware of better ones that also host 1:25000 TASMAP. That's the only reason I have Avenza on my phone. For everywhere else I use different apps.

big fan of the nswtopo 1:25000 maps.. i've grabbed a number of them but now when i browse the store for them, none are loading for me? have they been removed?

Re: Thoughts on Avenza maps?

I just had a look and found you can search maps by vendor, so for NSWTopo maps: https://www.avenzamaps.com/vendor/1004/nswtopo

Then click the map and zoom in on what you want. They do sometimes take a little while to load.

Re: Thoughts on Avenza maps?

That's interesting. Glad they're still on there. And on the website they seem to be cheaper than what I was paying on the app.

Still not working for me via the app though, i used to be able to just zoom around the map of Tassie and they would show there, but now only the 1:250,000 maps are there. I guess I'll have to figure out how to get them via the website onto the app
