REVIEW: TOPO Australia & New Zealand FULL v5 [4Gig]

OK, just about to get this before my rainforest trip in North QLD next week. Should have by the 27th and then I can give a report on functionality in both Nuvi and Etrex 20...

REVIEW: TOPO Australia & New Zealand FULL v5 [4Gig]

Read this on another forum...

Took me 2 F'ing hours (USB 1.0) to load it onto my eTrex 20 because my lappy card reader won't read a 64G card!

Map is so huge that screen redraws are now measured in minutes not seconds

Garmin eTrex 20/30 are just SH1T really!

This map goes to the Nuvi while the Lite version goes back onto the eTwreck, sheesh!

If you don't need routing by road and only only use cross country (like walking) then perhaps the LITE version will not hobble your Etrex!

I tried it, damn near froze my Etrex solid! Map redraws take ages, screen is crowded with guff and yes it does work better on the Car based GPS's.

Conclusion: Garmin finally get off your fat and lazy arrrses and finally put out a handheld GPS that can handle the leviathanic map sizes you are producing...!

Hmm, v5 works fine on my etrex 30.

I just change some of the detail to a bit lower.

The only thing that's painful is using raster topo maps on it.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

Are you talking about the v5 LITE version because yes it does work well on the Etrex...

...but the new v5 FULL 4Gig version grinds my Etrex to a slow crawl...

Hmmm... how slow does the full version slow down the Etrex? I have my Etrex 30 and an Oregon 600. I am assuming that the Oregon 600 with faster processor should be able to handle it, but I really wanted to get the V5 to share with the two devices - one is currently using V3 and one with V4.

Also, where did you get it from? I rang Johnny Appleseed GPS in Melbourne, and they said they won't get it until later in December.

Have you found significant improvement in maps from the V4 to the V5? Is it worth the upgrade?

I like the V5 LITE version because I don't use road routing on the Etrex.

But V5 FULL goes onto the car Nuvi and works well.

The only difference I can see is that it is as updated as the current City Navigator but the topo remains basically unchanged unless Australia has some new geological features only just discovered!.
