gps to google earth - how?

Postby walkabout » Tue 15 Jul, 2014 1:01 pm

I'm feeling like a real dill-brain. I've spent the morning trying to view ent world's maps in google earth - no luck.

I have previously successfully loaded the maps from his link to my new etrex (thanks Ent for all the hard work) and have been having a play. However, when the gps is connected to the computer and I try and import the tracks into google earth, I get a message "loaded no data".

When I try and open the files on the computer, I get a message "disc image file is corrupted". :?

What am I doing wrong? Can someone please help me, given that my tech knowledge is very limited  :(

Thanks in advance for any help.

Aren't Ent's maps all Garmin img files that are used specifically on Garmin GPS units? Otherwise, I understand gpx track files can be imported into GoogleEarth directly.

Correct. Ent's maps are Garmin .img files. They don't load on Google Earth and they won't open on the computer, they only work on a Garmin GPS.

Your computer thinks they are a disk image because of the .img suffix on the file name but when it tries to open the disk image it doesn't find what it is looking for, therefore it throws the error message.

If you run Garmin Basecamp and connect the GPS to the computer, you should be able to browse the map in Basecamp. It's a bit slow, but it works.

You can then export from basecamp as a gpx or kml file that you can use in GE.

Does BaseCamp export gpx? I haven't found it my the Mac version. Had to export to my Garmin unit and then manually extract from the unit's storage.

If you go to the view button up the top you can also view it on google earth.
