UK-based SATcase has launched a satellite communications device of the same name. The case can transform a standard smartphone into a satellite phone, ensuring that its user can communicate no matter where in the world they are. The device contains a 406 beacon that can help SAR teams locate people quickly and accurately and is also capable of reaching frequencies that can be utilised by SAR teams searching by land, air or sea
(in built VHF emergency radio)

At this stage fits the Samsung Galaxy, It is still pre production, but they are taking orders

It does not get more awesome than this. Though I do wonder if the inbuilt PLB uses a separate power source.

I thought you would like it, looking forward to Ents thoughts.
I wonder if it will reduce the price of current PLB's?

I guess it will depend how sharp their pricepoint is.

There's stuff all info on the website. Until this improves from vaporware, nothing to get too excited about...

Just a shame it is powered by Globalstar. Their satellites do not have 100% worldwide coverage and have had a few problems over the last few years. I have been using an awesome product called a Delorme Inreach SE http://www.inreachdelorme.com/product-info/inreachse.php. Excellent, simple, functional, great on batteries and robust. And the InReach is standalone so you don't have to rely on the 1 day battery life of many a smartphone :-) Smartphone battery flat= SATcase useless.

Emergency tool that depends on a short market life electronic gadget does not rate highly in my books. Smartphones these days last no more than 2 years on contract while many are on an annual cycle. A standalone unit with BT or wired connectivity with a smartphone will barely do, not when it needs to be cased within and let alone is Samsung specific. Fine if it's paid by the company or others, not otherwise.
Just move it!
