Three slices of Maasdam and a snickers and a half.

Went out before brekky for a short walk on Monday supposed to be for 12 ks but just kept going, was a nice 5 degrees, light 10-15 knots onshore souwester, sun was shining-bliss.
There's a one stop shop/super thingy at 12ks then I'll head back home for lunch I venture to myself. She'll be apples!
12ks later and I think wait-I have no cash-spent it on some Granita biscuits the day before! But hang on I have a $2 coin in my pocket so off I plod.
Surely that two dollars will get me something at a one stop/supermarket thingy I know. Not far from home surely I'll run into somebody I know.
Look into my wee sack and lo and behold two dollars fifty five in the bottom. You little ripper.
Go into the super, the Maasdam cheese slices look good, I'll have two dollars worth please-three slices. What I exclaim!
But turn to see the one and a half Snickers on special for two dollars.
Brekky will be three slices of Maasdam and a snickers and a half.
I was nearly drooling at this stage, grabbed the stash and I fled to sit and inhale the brekky.
My tucker related post is about -what have you found food related that really made your day that was unexpected. Maybe someone packed your food and put something special in. You found some Cointreau you forgot about.
I also found some Lindt (4) balls not long back, buried from an earlier trip that I completely forgot about-they were the best Lindt balls I have ever eaten!

I found an old ciggie packet in my first aid kit from a previous walk. There wasn't any smokes but there was a joint a mate had left from a previous long walk.

I thought, well it's a nice day, why not. OMG, I started getting paranoid and then the first hill was like climbing Mt Everest! Only smoked half of it and the other half went in the fire that night. Give me a flask on Scotch any day but I'll leave the pot to the kids.

Great thread Lamont. Crollsurf, agreed on the whisky but desperate times and all that

Walking from Tharwa to Thredbo late November last year. I arrived at 4 Mile hut on the 3rd day. I was absolutely parched. Boiling hot outside already. What did I find in the hut??? Glorious beer! Finished it far too quickly.

I think I might cry if I pulled up and there was that beer there. Warm or not!

Hey Crolly (as it was a food related question) I have a strange feeling you were first thinking of the kilo of Corn Chips (Burger Rings?) you 'needed' later in the day

Standing at the same wee deli a few days later-
We have some new items in, would you like to try them? Well maybe, what are they? This Italiany pork thing called porchetta and a sweet called baklava! Yes and yes. But what about bread I don't want a whole loaf. Well we got some rolls in this morning you can have one of them. Is fifty cents alright?
Two slices of Maasdam, two of porchetta and a baklava. Now there's a turn up for the books!
Both were excellent.
Memories of Montepulciano.
I thought I was having smarties and corned beef.
Finally worked how to re-size a pic
What do you reckon Zapruda-your beer and the porchetta?

Oof that looks good. Porchetta should be standard in all supermarkets imo.

Not as juicy as the stuff I (and probably you and others have had?) had in Italy.
But what a surprise.
I'm trying to warm it up in the sun!

Cheese and a snickers, that's weird. Crusty bread and Ham, nothing special there Lamont.

Always on the hunt for good food for that first day. Typically a take-away Ham and salad roll for lunch. Bacon and cheese roll for dinner and some Miso soup to dunk it in. Easy pleasy.

If your heading for the Western end of the Blue Mountains, NSW, there is a Cafe across from the pub at Mt Victoria that does an Eggs Benedict that is to die for.

A pleasant surprise for others, I smuggled a six pack of coopers pale ale cans to tali karng Dec 2018, 38 degrees, and no breeze... geez it was a warm one. River level low as we walked up from road so river crossings wernt as nice. A beer each whilst soaking in the lake on a hot humid Victorian Dec. Pains me to think it was burnt out in Feb 2019.

Sorry we are out of Porchetta. Bugger.
Hmmm, Mortadella (Melosi)will have to do instead. Shave it so thin son so I can just about see through it. Nice. Very nice. We are getting better at Mortadella in Oz.

This is true. For years it was just peppery devon. I still dream of the Mortadella I ate in Bologna :P

Melosi is the only brand I will eat here. The others have no balance. Do you know of a better brand?
I had slices cut off this size one often up around that area. Always in village shops-not supers.
Nothing better than pulling into a country shop and getting two or three slices of one of these. Usually hand cut (shaved to perfection) or on the BIG slicer.
Longest I came across was 1.2m long. Got the first slice.
With some good hard bread charged by the kilo. Excellent and very fair prices.
No Ozzie crap about I am an 'artisan' so you will pay more fathead. No pretence.
Got to love that!

Surely I would get the guernsey for the " Best equipped bushwalker" were I to carry on of these with me?

I haven't had any in a while but their capocollo was my favourite. Their prosciutto was pretty average last I tried.

Hmmm you little ripper -now they have some locally made Dolmades. Better give me a few of them with the baklava and some Maasdam....
What a brekky!
Wish my local white bread IGA was the same.
Oh the humanity.
