Suprising Shelf life of rice

Not exactly bushtucker, but thought it would be interesting. A mate opened some packets of Kookaburra brand white rice the other day, which according to the packets went use by in early 2009(!). These were part of some old cyclone stocks that had been sealed by him and forgotten for 10 years.

Looked good, and apparently tasted good when cooked, turned out to be fine. I know brown rice lasts shorter time than white but prior to this I had been told 2-3 years is about the limit for white before it becomes rancid. Maybe rice lasting longer is common knowledge to everyone else, but I was quite surprised.

Not surprised at all if under ideal conditions wheat can last for 2 millenia

Under normal conditions brown rice remains good for 3 months and polished white rice for 2 years. But stored properly it could easily be expected to last 20 years with some sources saying indefinitely.

If you are storing food for survival purposes (say in a boat or nuclear fallout shelter), you want to generally rotate it with new supplies based on the used by date even though it could last longer.

The other day i tried...
7 year old Maggi 2 minute noodles, still good no different
4 year old Aldi Ham in an alloy can, still good no different
2 Year old Condensed milk, still good no different
5 Year old Aldi Baked beans still good, no different

5 year old Aldi Corned Beef... No good at all far too metallic from the galvanising.

That gives the term Freeze Dried a whole new meaning.

Powdered eggs packed in 1942 eaten in 1964. Tasted absolutely vile but nobody died (immediately at least).
