Ah, the old "dixies"!

Over the years I've changed my cooking approach so that everything is done in one titanium mug. I don't do anything more complicated than boiling water then adding stuff to it.

Mind you, I'm very much in the "eat to hike" camp rather than the "hike to eat" one.

My progression:
Dixies -> 2 x Cups, Canteen, Steel -> Trangia -> 1 x Cup, Canteen, Steel -> Titanium mug.

Me too !
Then I got bored & went retro !
Most ingredients are prepped beforehand...all I'm doing is some assembly, then applying heat by boiling, smoking or steaming.

Thinking retro/bushcraft, how do you work all this magic with an open fire?

I'm usually walking in NP's, so no open fire.
Roughly, fires burn at 600-1000°c & aluminium melts @600°c so you have to be careful.
Pull coals to the side between a row of rocks/logs for height adjustment, grill across these, then place the pot on top of grill or if its a billy with a handle, it can be suspended higher above the fire.

Apart from just being careful, it's just another heat source.

+ a small lightweight thermos acts as a baby fridge, keeping your prepped-at-home goodies cool. They keep food/drinks hot/cold between 4 - 6hrs depending on make.
A frozen thermos & goodies lasts a little longer & adding a lightweight insulated reflective cozy stretches the time it stays cool.

Thanks ofuros. I thought it maybe a silly question but I'm glad I asked now.

No silly questions here.
Small stick fires are fine...if your dragging logs to feed the flames or warming your hands from 6m away, it might end in tears.
Flames cooler, coals super hot. Just keep your aluminium pot above the red hot coals.
They were issued to armys around the the world so they have to be fairly robust.

Looks delicious ofuros!

I just picked up big stainless mug. Fits a mini gas and stove, put a sock over it. Going to try it as a do-it-all pot/crockery!

Baby thermos malarkey....

Overnight Yogurt

You'll need :- 1 baby thermos.
2 tblsp of fresh yogurt kept cool in your thermos until needed or...Yogurt powder from the supermarket.

Fresh yogurt...bring powdered milk to the boil, then let it cool down to body temp. Add to the fresh starter in the thermos, close lid, shake,
place in your beanie, check it in the morning.

Powdered yogurt...boil water then let cool to body temp. Add to powder close lid & shake. Place in your beanie & check in the morning.

Eat on its own, add to muesli/ cereal, rehydrated fruit, add fruit powders, coconut powder, thin down to make a Lassi (yogurt shake), use half for breakie & add mint, garlic to the other half to make a sauce for flat bread wraps etc etc.

Ole fighting irons preferred for serving not cooking. Thats why cups canteen are s/steel and rat packs are designed for heating in water or dehydes for boiling water at 100c not over a fire!? Alumimium would leave a bad taste like those hotdogs...

Tasted better than any freeze dried meals I have tried & that's all that matters when I'm bushwalking, tied & hungry.
As for cooking with steel, aluminium or titanium cooking gear...well, that's always a personal choice.
