On my walk this weekend I took along a packet of instant couscous to see what that was like for value/weight etc. It really is as easy as 2 minute noodles, and just needs some boiling water, and I like it better than noodles for sure. Just wondering if anyone else has tried taking this sort of thing along with them?

Yep, we've taken them on walks before. You're right, they're quick, easy, lightweight, and tasty enough to warrant calling food!
Well, they're a bit better than that, they are actually enjoyable to eat.

Another cous cous dish I eat is made by buying a pre-packaged sauce, like indian or chick-pea, they are a plastic sealed bag containing a liquid saucy mix, typically about 285 grams which makes them heavy, but they are good for a luxury meal. Can't remember the brand, but I got them from Wholesome House in Deloraine, and lately have seen some of them in Coles as well.
Boil the bag for a while til it's hot, then use the boiling water for the plain cous cous.
It was hard to get the hang of how much cous cous to cook up per meal, initially we cooked way too much but can't leave food behind so we ate real well...

Who could resist the smiling face of Ainsly. Ive not taken it before...but now that i know that I could have Ainsly along with me I will be in future...good side dish for my Forth Valley Smoked Drumsticks...they weigh a bit...but damn they are nice.

Thanks for the heads up on Ainsly' Cous Cous I will give it a try,I use San Remo Cous Cous that I make up as follows.
1 Cup CC ,1 tea spoon Massel Goumet Plus stock powder(which contains a good selection of Dehyd vegies) and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a double ziplok bag,when I am ready to eat all I need to do is add 1 cup of boiling water stir let it stand then stir again serve and eat.
And yes we dont eat this one out of the bag but 1/2 the quantanties into seperate bags go to step 1 and you could :)

I love butter... I took a whole 500g block of butter on a 14 day walk once (to share between 2 of us). For cooking, and for spreading on mtn bread and on ryvitas and vita wheats.

No, it was fine. But it was rather cold up in the Western Arthurs, despite being late Summer. :) I guess that is a risk though... in which case, I'd probably ditch what was left in a composting toilet (if there was one nearby), and just go without for the rest of the trip. Have never had any problems so far though.

on a recent 3 weeks trip, diet base :) -couscous, pasta & rice
lime cc, (cant remember brand but from BigW supermarket) dried beans & tuna made an ecxcellent meal

Oh, so good! I love Ainsleys couscous range. You must try the Roast Vegies flavour and the Moroccan Medley. So good!
