Friction fire bow drill

Postby gordononline » Sat 04 Jan, 2014 9:19 am

I've been watching some shows on YouTube about starting friction fires for cooking and warmth - but most of the clips are from US or Europe and use northern hemisphere woods. There was one that was in Oz but that used Lantana as the base for the fire. Not sure if there is any of that wood in my area or where I normally walk and camp - we have mainly gum trees.

I live near Canberra, and have a few national parks nearby however I don't know what type of wood to use to try to develop fire making skills. If you have used native woods for bow-drill fire making can you please let me know what you have used for the drill and the base? I understand that the base should be a softer wood and the drill should be reasonably harder wood - but I've never been successful in getting a good enough coal with what I've used.
